Serena Williams Is a Soldier

Serena Williams

Serena Williams won't go down without a battle. After collapsing onto the grass in the second set with a left calf injury, she managed to recover during a rain delay to gut out a three-set victory at Wimbledon yesterday. Putting away No. 10-seeded Daniela Hantuchova sets up a quarterfinal showdown at the All England Club between our favorite soldier and No. 1 Justine Henin.

Basically playing on one leg, Serena found a way to win and gives credit to where credit is due:

"I was definitely saved by the rain," Serena would say later. "I couldn't move before the rain.

I could insert a completely legit Pacman Jones reference here ... but I won't ... but I could ... but I digress ... back to Serena's story:

"... Just everything stopped."

When play resumed, both of her calves were taped heavily. She also was wearing ankle-length white pants under her skirt to protect her legs from the chill, with temperatures in the low 50s.

I have to admire Serena's toughness and determination, especially since I was always the kid in elementary school who would give an Academy Award-worthy performance complete with "oh, the pain" and "save yourselves" after receiving a paper cut. Laugh, mock, turn you head up in disgust if you must, but it got me out of math.
