The Red Sox Are Champs ... and the New Yankees?

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox kinda sucked the fun and drama out of the World Series by sweeping, make that crushing, the Colorado Rockies and winning their second title in four years.

Red Sox Nation couldn't be any less thrilled about this, but the rest of us are a little, eh. For one, it's always nice to see a little, um, competition ... in a competition, but it also would've been nice to see the media carnival that would've besieged the city of Denver on a night that included not only a World Series Game 5 but also a Monday Night Football game with the Broncos hosting the Packers.

Where would the allegiance of hometown fans lie? With the Little Rockies That Could or the We Still Think John Elway's Our QB Broncos?

Alas, we'll never know.

But what we do know is the Rockies can kiss their Disney-movie-based-on-a-somewhat-true-story goodbye. Colorado's finish was amazing, winning 21 wins out of 22 games to get to the Series. But saying you won 22 of your last 27 games just doesn't sound as sexy for Hollywood. Don't get me wrong, it's still an impressive stat, but just not quite as sexy.

Hollywood's all about the sexy, sorry Rox.

It seems time was the ultimate momentum killer. With an 8-day layoff between the NLCS and the World Series, we all witnessed the hot-to-trot Rockies became sluggish against the dominant Red Sox.

Hopefully we won't hear the word "curse" and "Red Sox" in the same sentence ever again. If you weren't completely sure that the curse was dead and buried in 2004, you know the deal now. The Sox aren't cursed, let's face it: they're the new Yankees.

Sure, the Red Sox have had to endure the loser label for much of their existence, but in this decade 'Ugly Betty' has become prom queen. Take a look at the numbers: second World Series title in four years, playoff appearances in four of the past five seasons, five out of eight seasons where they've won 90+ games, and they're operating on a $143 million payroll. Yeah, that's looking like the makings of a dynasty, dy-to-the-nasty.

Personally, the Red Sox were a much better story when they were a long-suffering franchise/fan base. Now they're just the Yankees, with players who don't quite have that GQ "Yes, I know I'm Hot" look.
