Injured Serena Williams Withdrawals

If you were dreaming of Serena Williams kicking butt in the WTA championships in Madrid, now would be the time to hit the snooze button on that dream.

The tennis star pulled out of her opening match with an injury on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old American had just lost the first set against Russian Anna Chakvetadze 6-4 but retired as the second set was about to start.

She had called for the doctor to attend a problem with her left knee when the score was 5-4, having looked short on mobility throughout the opening set. She played on with strapping around the knee but did not look happy.

Big sister Venus had already pulled out of this event due to some ongoing dizziness.

So Serena's withdrawal means (1) world number Justine Henin automatically qualifies for the semi-finals after her two opening wins and (2) I (and possibly you too) just tuned out.

Maybe she'll blog about it.
