By Chasity Johnson, Courtesy of Blackdoctor.orgAfter being shot and wounded in his Miami home, Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died. The 24-year-old football player was shot Monday during a home invasion and died later at a hospital.
According to Taylor's former attorney Richard Sharpstein, "The blood loss was too much. He didn't make it." "He never regained consciousness after the shooting, Sharpstein told CNN."It's a senseless, tragic death that was so unnecessary, another example of the incessant violence in – not only our community – but the country now."
Almost without exception, every major city in America is seeing record numbers of young people – mostly African American males – die as a result of gun violence.
Black men are America's primary crime victims. Black men over 18 are only 4 percent of this country's population, yet more are hospitalized for assault injuries each year than women and girls of all races combined. More black men died from homicide in 2004 alone than all the children aged 10 and under in the previous five years.Today, even after years of mostly falling crime rates, black men still die from homicide at extraordinary rates. Black death rates from homicide in 2002 were almost six times that of whites. Black men 15 to 24 years old are most vulnerable – some 85 per 100,000 died in 2004 from homicide, compared to a national average of six per 100,000.
The contribution of social factors to the health problems of African American men deserves further attention than thus far received. When an African American celebrity, such as Sean Taylor, dies in such a tragic death, most people look at the situation as a rare occurrence. However, the reality is that this happens everyday in the Black community. African American violence is one of the top 10 killers of African Americans and is and has been a public health epidemic.

I bet a million dollars that whoever the theif was, it was someone he knew. That's why it's not good to be too friendly and flashy when you have money. A humble person never broadcasts what they have because you are aware of people that are less fortunate.

Maybe it's just me, or could this crime be read in different ways. Rare occurence, I think not. From what I am hearing, the phone lines were cut and the culprit fired his gun and an unexpected death occurred as a result. What robber would take the time to make sure that the phone lines were unable to be of use. How did this person(s)know how to enter this home. Some things just don't sound right. Just because African American violence is one of the top killers of CERTAIN communities, doesn't always mean that the media has to make us look like we are inferior to everyone else. Some news is just not heard, because of it's COLOR. Let's be REAL, the media will have us looking like monsters.

It saddened me to hear of the loss of another young black male. My son was killed five years ago, one gunshot to the buttocks that also hit a main artery and killed him instantly. It brought back so many sad memories of that night. Another mother has to bury their child, another family has to go through the sadness and loneliness of a sibling gone, and why? The ultimate question always. May God be with you and sustain your family as he has mine. Your son will always be with you in spirit and will never leave you. It may get hard sometimes, but continue to pray, God will see you through it. I know that it does not seem like you will ever smile again, but think of the good times you all had with Sean and you will smile again. I feel your pain, I feel your cries, I feel your anger, I feel your everything because I have been there. Nothing and no one can ever take the place of your child. Just continue to thank God for the time that you had with him because in all reality, he as well as my son were only lent to us for awhile. They were Gods children and he wanted another angel in his kingdom so he called him home. May he be waiting for you when you get there because you will see your son again as I will see mine. Live right, walk right and do as God would want you to and you will meet your baby at the pearly gates in HEAVEN! May God be with you and yours for-ever. Cry as much as you want but smile as much as you can.
With all my love to your family and friends, I have been there. Roberta

I'm appalled that there is even a suggestion of an alleged connection between Sean Taylor's ethnicity and him being the victim of a crime. Are we really just a few buzz words and cliche commments (i.e. "just another statistic") to the media? Sean was asleep at home with his fiance and their new child, what in the heck does that have to do with being "just another statistic"??? Shame on you for the implication and double shame for pulling this ridiculous "spin" on the events prior to the man being laid to rest. This isn't the type of crime that should be correlated to black violence and shows a bit of ignorance for even suggesting it.

Okay, let's be critical of what happened here and then give our condolences to the Taylor family. A rich, young, black athlete had a break in only 9 days prior. This young man had his car riddled with bullets, but he couldn't have a weapon in his home because he had a record of trouble with law enforcement. What precautions did the law take to protect him? Why didn't Sean hire extra security? Why didn't his security provider notify the police when the system failed? Was Sean the target if he wasn't expected to be home? We all feel bad for Sean and his family. May his soul RIP, but think about the others at risk. Think about TI? With no protection, we are exposed in ways no man or his family should be. The NFL should have done something when the car was riddled. It was "Three Strikes" and now Sean is out of the league.

I am truly sorry for the loss that this family has felt. And it is sad to say that this is a normal occurence because others hate to see others succeed. This man had a promising career and was climbing the football latter, and in an instance was gone. But just look at the legacy that he left behind he gave america's youth a model athlete to look up to. it is just to badd that he was tasken so soon. (
