Larry Johnson has money, fame, and now he has a diploma from UNLV, 16 years after leaving school for the NBA. Johnson promised his mother he would graduate from college, and he made good on that promise, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science studies.
Johnson played three years at UNLV, was a two-time All-American, won the John Wooden and James Naismith awards, and was the best player on the 1990 national championship team.At a time when the nationwide college graduation rate for black males continues to dwindle, it's nice to see Johnson, who in the small picture may not need the degree, go back and get it because he sees its importance in the big picture of life.
The commencement ceremony took place at the Thomas & Mack Center, where his No. 4 jersey and hangs from the rafters.
One might even wonder if years from now, we will see Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, and even LeBron James, who never went to college, go back and get their diplomas.
Only time will tell.

Here's a clip of Larry Johnson playing his alter-ego Grandmama. We're pretty sure he didn't take Cross-Dressing 101 but he does make for a funny old lady:

The whole thing about Larry's satisfying his promise to his mom to graduate from college is, at this point, exaggerated and designed to look good for the public. With his achievement and earnings, she could care less. You ain't fooling me!

Congrats to LJ. I hate to be negative because LJ was my favorite player in the NBA back in the day and I still defend him to this day, but I heard that he and JIM BROWN are endorsing some type of Thug/Gang related energy beverage. I would appreciate it if someone at Black Voices could contact LJ and get his side of the story.

This was a great decision on his part. Life sometimes has a way of getting to your money, but no one can take your education from you.
