Wondering why Chad Ocho Cinco was still Chad Johnson on Sunday?
Everyone knows the reason Bengals receiver Chad Johnson legally changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco was so he could have "Ocho Cinco" on the back of his jersey. Even though the NFL is cool with that, Reebok, the company who makes the jerseys for the league isn't. According to Darren Rovell at CNBC, any athlete who chooses to change their number or name on their jerseys, they have to do it months before the season starts. The problem is, Reebok has already produced a thousands of jerseys that say "C. Johnson" on the back and there's a ton more on store shelves.
What to do?
Apparently Chad may have the option of buying all of his old jerseys at cost (about $48) so that Reebok can start producing the new jerseys. A source close to Reebok told Rovell that there may be more than 100,000 jerseys in stock and in stores. That's roughly $4.8 million if he wanted to buy out his old jersey.
At this point, Reebok needs to take the loss. They're not going to sell any more "C. Johnson" jerseys with fans knowing the player changed his name, but they will definitely sell out of "Ocho Cinco" jerseys. If not, fans will most likely cop a bootleg on eBay.

With Eastbay and NFL.com selling customized jerseys, Reebok might not sell many of of the old 'C. Johnson' jerseys. Not that the Bengals are exactly lighting things up right now, but the entire appeal of buying a #85 jersey is going to lie with having 'Ocho Cinco' on the back. Otherwise there are going to be a lot of C-Johnson shirts put into closeout sales.

Why does Reebok get to dictate what the players jersey says? They had the poor business sense to prefabricate over 100,000 jerseys

First of all Johnson is a slave owners name forced upon our ancestors when they were still slaves. The NFL has always marketed its marquee star players and their jerseys are the most commonly bought items. Now when you say a name like Montana,Rice,Favre,Bradshaw,or Marino. You immediately know who they are.But a Common name such as Johnson makes you wonder is it... Rudi Johnson,Keyshawn Johnson,Woody Johnson ,or could it be Johnson & Johnson No Tears Shampoo. He comes from Miami and for those no in the know ,Miami is a cultural melting pot.a little latin flavor has never messed up any soup,so i think Reebok needs to get off of their high horse and respect the mans legal surname.besides if it weren't for The NFL i'd never of my own choice own anything by Reebok ,it's not even an american company.think about that.So this Pittsburgh Steeler fan salutes ocho cinco and hopes he'll come and play for our team.Go Steelers!
