Earlier this week, former Chicago Bear and NFL legend William 'Refrigerator' Perry was hospitalized in South Carolina due to complications from Guillain-Barré syndrome, a chronic inflammation disorder of the peripheral nerves. Apparently the body's immune system attacks its nerves, typically causing severe weakness that usually starts in the legs and quickly worsens.Perry has been in the hospital for close to a week but according to his nephew, Purnell Perry, he's expected to make a full recovery.
"They were making sure he was in pretty good health before they started treating him," Purnell Perry told the Chicago Sun Times.
The Fridge was hospitalized for five months when he was diagnosed with the disease last June. For those who forgot, the 300-pound plus defensive lineman played for the Bears' 1985 Super Bowl team.

I was diagnosed with Guillian Barre'Syndrome...there is hope and life after GBS. I was down for nearly a year...between the hospital and rehab center where I had to learn to walk, talk, eat solid foods again...it was a long..slow and hard process..but life is so worth it...I would strongly recommend contacting the local GBS chapter. You'll be able to share stories and they are really supportive and believe me...they encourage hope...My brother had it 15 years prior to my having it...so I knew what I was developing. It is a rare virus...not a disease....it's hard work coming back from GBS....but it can be done...God bless and help you....Best of luck...you can beat it!!

I developed GBS in January 2008. It has been a long hard road back and I am still challenged daily. My sensory nerves were hit hard, this means my nerves sense pain where there is no real pain. I have been told 24 months is a normal recovery time. My 24 months is January 10, 2010. I wish there was a local GBS chapter close to me. I have heard wonder things about them.
Keep the Faith!

Hang in there. I was diagnosed with GBS just 2 weeks ago. I am out of the hospital and slowly making my way back to recovery. They say it takes time. This is something that needs to be brought to the public's attention. I went to the emergancy room three times and they still couldn't find anything wrong with me. I had never heard of this before. Even though it is a rare disease, it would be helpful if people (and doctors) knew what symptoms to look for. The earlier it is caught, the quicker the recovery time is.

WOW! I never thought that the illness that I had when I was 14 years old ( now 34) would be in the news so much. Mr. Perry you were one of my most favorite players back in the day and I want to tell you it is like a hard work out before a tough game. You have to take care of yourself, pace yourself and have hope and confidence. I was paralized for 3 months and had to have plasma transfusions six times. IT SUCKED! After all of that and a year and half of therapy I I finally learned how to do EVERYTHING again. Hang in there.
