Last month, injury plagued Serena Williams during her finals match against Victoria Azarenka at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.Williams lost the match 6-3, 6-1, and her number one world ranking dropped to number two. The number one spot was taken by Russia's Dinara Safina. But apparently that doesn't matter to Serena because she knows the truth.
"We all know who the real number one is," Williams said during a news conference at the Italian Open on Monday, according to Reuters. "Quite frankly, I'm the best in the world."
Williams does have 10 Grand Slam titles, while Safina has none. Plus, their 2009 records (Williams is 21-4, and Safina is 18-6) underscore Williams' sentiments as well. But in the end, Safina doesn't seem too bothered by the comment.
"She can say this because she won many more Grand Slams than me," the 23-year-old Safina told Reuters. "But she's also older than me, so she has more experience. So let's see when I'm her age how many titles I have and then we can say."

When Serena Williams came onto the tennis scene, she had a look of complete innocence. Being somewhat in the shadow of her older sister Venus, Serena wore the braids with beads that were both sisters' signature style. By the early 2000s, Williams made a name for herself apart from her sister as a player and superstar. She first set herself apart with bold, playful blonde hair, here against a strong monochromatic outfit. New to make up, Serena began expressing a more womanly presentation. Serena's red carpet arrival at the 2003 ESPY Awards in a pink gown fit for Barbie showed the world that she could be aggressive on the tennis court and girly on the red carpet. While she wins no points for the cut, color or fit of this gown, Williams deserves kudos for her confidence in striking a pose. (Photo: Gregg DeGuire, WireImage.com)

Serena's red carpet fashion sense stunned the world, despite her high style on the courts. Her 2004 appearance at a VH1 event in a blue, bedazzled gown was one of many that left people wondering if she was really a drag queen. (Photo: Carlo Allegri, Getty Images)

Ever proud of her body, her accomplishments and who she was, a girl from Compton who made REAL good, Serena Williams was never ashamed to look exactly how she wanted to. She even wore bikinis with bravado. (Photo: Ron C. Angle, BEImages)

Martinez, it gives me great pleasure to RESPOND to your comment! Every word you said is exactly right.
We'll be surprise if Venus and Serena's parents would really share what their experience has been in laboring with their girls in tennis against the odds!
I agree. If you don't speak up for yourself in playing sports, no one else will for you! They both have EARNED it... So let it Go! It is going to be hard for someone to wear their shoes in Tennis! LET'S WAIT, WATCH, AND SEE!

I appreciated how you encompassed the whole picture. There are so many haters on these women out there. It's pathetic, cruel, and downright disrpestful. These women has handled adversity with much grace and poise. You never hear them making cruel and disparaging remarks against anyone, let alone their opponents. They will be retiring Tennis soon, but on the terms that they see fit, because they know that they are only human.

Serena will be the best in the world when she proves it on the court instead of mouthing of to the media about being number one. She acts like the number one ranking is something she is entitled to because she is Serena Williams. She has racked up a lot of grand slam titles but she will never be a truly "great" player because of her total lack of humility. She rarely if ever give credit to her opponent when she does lose. She always has some excuse when she loses. The sooner she sheds her street walker clothes and image that she carries onto the court the more deserving she will be if she performs well.

I disagree. I think she is the top player in the world. If we look at just ability and skill. If Serena were the same age as that Russian, she would have whooped her A**, and we all know it. The Russian brought it up!
So, just look at tennis ability and athleticism, not at what you think of what she wears, and her attitude, then, she is the greatest! Like Ali said when he was in his prime, he was the greatest!

I respect your right to disagree. However, your memory is not very good, That Russian whipped Serensa a** all over the court in the Wimbledon finals...and the Russian was only 17 at the time. All the grand slams and number one rankings won't buy Serena two things that would make her really great: Class and Sportsmanship.
