One of the headlines over the holiday weekend was the arrest of San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman, who allegedly choked MTV reality star Tila Tequila and threw her to the ground at her house. According to the Associated Press, Tequila signed a citizen's arrest warrant charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment, which are both felonies. Merriman spent just a couple of hours in jail and denied all of the allegations.
"I think when it all surfaces, it will be a different situation. Period," Merriman told the Associated Press, who described Tequila as an acquaintance, not his girlfriend. He also referred the media to a press release that he released through his lawyer shortly after his release.
"At the time, I was concerned about her welfare, given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in, and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided," Merriman said in the statement. "We would all do our best to help a friend if we considered their actions to be detrimental to their personal safety. I, in no way, caused any harm to Ms. Nguyen, however, paramedics were called and she was examined, but no injuries were reported."
For those who are unaware, Tequila was the star of the MTV reality show, 'A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila,' a bisexual dating show that featured both men and women trying to get with Tila. The show lasted two seasons, but Tila is also famous for being the first person to get 1 million friends on MySpace and posing for various men's magazines.
