Any NBA fan who has followed LeBron James' career knows that it was his time in high school that set him on a path to become "the Chosen One." But not many people know the intimate details from behind the scenes, as James and four of his best friends grew to become one of the best high school basketball team's the nation has ever seen. In Bron's new book, 'Shooting Stars,' which he wrote with noted author Buzz Bissinger, King James offers details about how he met his childhood friends and the work they put in to win multiple high school state championships.
The young team was already gaining notoriety around the community, and people knew that whatever high school they went to, they would be making championship runs every year. Most people thought the crew would end up going to Buchtel High School, a predominately black school where basketball was a deep tradition. There was a problem, though. One of James' teammates and best friends, Little Dru Joyce, didn't want to go to Buchtel. ...
"During 'open gyms' at Buchtel in eighth grade, which were basically informal tryouts, Little Dru sensed that the coaching staff saw no immediate future in him -- too short, too scrawny, too little of everything," James writes. "Buchtel was stacked for the coming year, and there was no way Little Dru would make varsity. He would have to start on the junior-varsity team, then methodically work his way up, and Little Dru didn't want to go that route."

The friends then decided to go to St. Vincent-St. Mary high school, a private, predominately white Catholic school that guaranteed Little Dru a spot on the varsity team. The decision didn't go over to well for the people following the boys.
"The four of us may have been brothers to one another, but to many in Akron's black community, we were now traitors who had sold out to the white establishment," James details.
But the guys moved on, and in the book, James talks about the historic championship runs, the media swirling around the players and their post-high school careers. 'Shooting Stars,' which hit shelves this week, is actually a precursor to the documentary 'More Than a Game,' which follows James and his former teammates during their rise. The film hits theaters on Oct. 2. For now, check out the trailer above.

Hey Robert, If you know so much about basketball then you should appreciate LeBron's game. So what if he is promoting himself the NBA uses his name for marking reasons so what's wrong with him doing it? He is very young and in my opinion has handled the fame, money and all that comes with it exceptionally well. So what he didn't shake hands after a tough series. The man is awesome. Give him some due respect. And his "airness" has been dunked on too. Micheal was and is the greatest but Lebron is reaching that level at a younger age. And for the most part with a lesser talented team up until last season.

What rule did he break? Many kids everyday stay out of public schools and go to Catholic schools. Here Catholic schools recruit the best jocks and give them a free ride. They also get free rides for being GREAT students or good musicians.

Wayne White.... no..wow to you! Off the wall? Why? Because you don't agree? The WOW and off the wall comment is extremely condescending and the God's creature comment in the framework of a basketball article IS TRULY (USING YOUR WORDS, "OFF THE WALL!)" If you read my statement I NEVER had or showed little regard for what he has done. Read the comment! I said, "He does not deserve to be anointed King because he hasn't even made Prince status yet!" I have immense respect for the game as I've followed the NBA my whole life. How dare you suggest otherwise since you know NOTHING about me? Finally, act like one of God's creatures? I suppose your comment calling me an ass is God like? Maybe you should get on your knees and pray for some of God's forgiveness and to have YOU, His creature, act better and not call people cuss words/names. Maybe, "YOU SHOULD ACT LIKE ONE OF GOD'S CREATURES!" You think?

SHELLY .... I'm not jealous... TRUST! I'll give you a break if you need one. Yes sweetie he is still young...I'm glad you're right about something. OH..make it 2 things, He does have (as you spelled it) along basketball career ahead of him. NOW: Who asked him to justify anything? Whether I flip hamburgers at McDonald's or own one what has that to do with what we're talking about? NO, wrong again...if that was me I would NOT be doing the same thing. As for the STFU comment you made: Naa, I'll keep saying my peace, Free country and all that! As for my sad pathetic life? I'll bet you would trade in a minute... I'm handsome, have a beautiful wife and children, live in a million dollar home, drive luxury cars, have more money than I deserve, love what I do and I'm sorry to say I'm not sad!! ;-( Sounds like you're bitter, ignorant and trying to live through someone else. Now that's sad. Have a nice day!!
