Baseball great Sammy Sosa spoke to Spanish station Primer Impacto yesterday regarding the dramatic lightening of his complexion. Defending his newfound facade, Sosa shot down claims that he is suffering from vitiligo, a skin disorder, and actually attributed his new look to a moisturizer.
According to the New York Daily News, Sosa said:
I'm doing well, doing well, thanks to God. ... I use a cream to keep my skin smooth and soft. I apply it before I go to bed. When I was playing for Chicago all those years, I was in the sun a lot for 1 o'clock games. The flashes (from the cameras) also made my skin look lighter.
What about those green contacts he's been sporting as of late? Sosa deflected critics by retorting that he was just trying something different. "I'm not trying to be superficial," he said.
Who knew a "cream" could literally wipe the black off of your face. I mean, is this guy serious? If I were to put on a cream that drastically altered my complexion, I'd probably sue -- not to mention take the quickest route to my dermatologist. I think it speaks volumes that Sosa plans on being the spokesperson for the "cream."
Sosa, who would not tell...the name of the cream he uses, did say that it is European and that he is in negotiations to market the product.
I get a headache just imagining how it is possible that any person would think this type of change has anything to do with keeping one's skin "smooth and soft." My people, my people, it is 2009, the year of the first black president. Must we still yearn for the Europeanization of our features? If we want to take it back to yesteryear -- beyond Michael -- let's take it back to the black empowerment years of the '60s and proclaim in our minds and hearts that we are black and beautiful. As God made us.

It's his body. What ever makes him happy, but he looks better with that rich dark skin in my opinion. Being of Cuban descent and every thing else for that matter, I can appreciate all shades and textures though. Maybe some others with issues will be able to one day also. Again, whatever makes him happy.

First of all, Sammy Sosa is not black nor white he is Dominican which makes him hispanic. There are alot of whitening creams in the market nowadays and even if he did attempt to bleach his skin, with all the hair weaves, blue and green contacts, and unnatural blondes I dont see what the problem is.

Names of a country and language has nothing to do with your racial make up. Speaking spanish does not make you spanish. Speaking english does not make you english. Speaking Arabic does not mean you are an Arab. Speaking Hebrew does not mean you are an Israeli. Sammy Sosa of West African Negro Origin.Dominican is not a race. Being Peurto Rican is not a race. Most Dominicans are of indigenous or native Indian plus African plus European Origin. Sammy Sosa's African Genes are the ones that predominates and it is his African Genes that more distinctly defines him. Everyone knows why his skin is black. It is because of his majority African Ancestry. So you all can cut the Dominican and Hispanic Crap. All it means is the African slaves he descended from were dropped off in the Dominican Republic. The African slaves I descended from were dropped of in the Americas. So we speak either Spanish or English, but that is not going to make him Spanish and it want make me English. Just as I am an African American, he is an African Dominican. I agree he is not black, but for sure he is of African Negro origin.

You sound like an idiot. Hispanic is not a race. You can be Black, White, Asian and whatever else and be Hispanic. Anyone who lays eyes on Sammy Sosa would conclude that he is indeed black. He was much darker than most freaking African Americans.

When Sammy Sosa played for the Cubs he was juiced up on steroids and used a corked bat. He is a very superficial person and a cheater. As soon as his corked bat and steroid abuse came to light, Sammy played like garbage. His career before (White Sox) and after (Orioles) the Cubs was forgetful, to say the least. Sammy is in constant need of attention and the spotlight. I say that we should give it to him. Afterall, our society applauds fakes and phonies. Furthermore, our society has become so stupid that people pay more attention to what color Sammy Sosa is than to what a despicable job Obama has done. Obama is another attention seeking, media glorified phony and fake that people should be playing closer attention to. Obama is the process of destroying the American way of life outlined in our Constitution, and is replacing it with a liberal, socialist agenda giving zero creedance to anyone's past accomplishments. Obama seeks to wipe us all out so America could start again - a new begining for all the irresponsible losers who caused our economic downfall. This program has been hastened by our government's non-action against illegal immigration, as well as our government "bailout" of banks which has resulted in nothing for the common man. America is in the toilet and all we worry about is Sammy Sosa?
