Former NBA Player Antoine Walker Accused of Being a Slumlord

If Antoine Walker's huge million-dollar gambling debt isn't enough, now he has to deal with the city of Chicago calling him a slumlord. Walker owns two real estate investment companies, Walker Ventures LLC and AW Realty LLC, which own and manage a number of properties in the Chicago area. The city has levied fines against Walker's companies, and residents of those properties are filing lawsuits for a number of problems that exist in the buildings. A story in the Chicago Tribune revealed that one of the buildings had a broken sewer pipe that filled the basement with feces, toilet paper and other trash that caused families to move out because of the smell.

Another property had a major mold problem that caused breathing problems for a 7-month-old boy, a lawsuit says, while toxic fumes and no heat caused tenants to abandon the building. Another building is infested with mice and roaches and has a problem with squatters. And yet another property has a raw sewage leak that damaged a condo unit. Walker's companies owe the city of Chicago $950,000 in fines and are facing more than a dozen lawsuits.

"I would like to humbly apologize to everyone who has been affected by the failings of my company," Walker told the Tribune. "It was never intended to present (tenants with) unacceptable living conditions. I wanted to be part of restoring the neighborhood. I've always been passionate about the South Side [of Chicago]."

Walker, 33, is hoping to resolve his financial problems soon and settle the pending lawsuits and city fees. Although he hasn't played in almost a year, last being waived by the Memphis Grizzlies, Walker is trying to sign with a team to get back on the court. At this point, however, not many teams are showing interest.
