World B. Free

An ex-girlfriend of former NBA star World B. Free was slain yesterday in front of her family's home in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn.

The victim, Audrey Johnson, 51, was visiting relatives in the neighborhood where she grew up when she heard a scuffle outside of the home. Her niece's boyfriend, Laquan Williams, 25, was being attacked by two men.

Johnson, attempting to intervene on Williams' behalf, was struck down by a bullet to the head when the perpetrators fired five bullets. Johnson's 14-year-old nephew, Daniel, was also shot in the leg and was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

According to police reports, the shots were not intentionally aimed at Johnson or her nephew; however, a police source at the scene said hat Johnson was indeed a marked target after she chose to step in and defend Williams, an ex-offender with quite a long rap sheet.

Brooklyn-native World B. Free, 55, whose birth name is Lloyd Bernard Free (he changed his name in 1980), had a 13-year NBA career. He played for numerous teams, including the Philadelphia 76ers, where he currently works as a community relations representative.

Although previously published news articles named Johnson as World B. Free's ex-wife, the reports are inaccurate. According to a 76ers' press spokesperson, "Free did have a relationship with Johnson many years ago; however, they were never married and this was in the past. While they haven't spoken in quite a while, he does want to extend his condolences to her family and friends."
