I met Stephen A. Smith a few times when doing his ESPN show. I liked the guy from the beginning, and I still do. I do not say the same thing about Jason Whitlock, a Fox sports writer who doesn't do a very good job of intelligently expressing opinions that go beyond the ridiculous rhetoric of guys like Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck.
Stephen A. Smith had it right when he described Gilbert Arenas as contributing to genocide in the black community. I also agreed with Rev. Al Sharpton's position when I spoke to him this week. Part of the reason I founded the Athlete Liberation and Academic Reform Movement (ALARM) was to help redefine what it means to be a black man and black athlete in America. Black men are not gun-toting thugs who mismanage their money and remain illiterate. We are leaders, thinkers and protectors of our communities. Gilbert Arenas, in his most recent behavior, represents none of that. Here is what Stephen A. Smith had to say:
"But the mess that Arenas has created is not going away. Nor are the questions destined to follow about professional athletes, specifically those from the African American community -- and how the criminal element has virtually hijacked the culture of black America.
As much as I've tried to disagree with my friend and noted contemporary, Jason Whitlock, who's repeatedly and vociferously lamented the state of affairs within the black community -- specifically as it pertains to the negative parts of hip-hop and its influence on black culture -- it simply cannot be denied any longer.
Genocide is taking place in the black Community, and this is a form of it.
For every foolish act like Plaxico Burress, Ron Artest or Arenas, there's a Grant Hill, Shane Battier or LeBron James -- guys who will be employing black athletes one day, either in an executive or ownership capacity."
Good for you, Stephen A. It's time that athletes, journalists, attorneys, coaches and black men start sounding the alarm to wake up the consciousness of the black male athletes everywhere. That's why our organization was founded. Please consider joining our cause.

God bless Stephen Smith for being a black man of real courage and telling it like it is. Al Sharpton who has finally said something I can support. This dangerous thug should be banned from the NBA for life. This is pure madness that these black athletes have a talent to make millions yet being a ghetto gun toting thug is more important. They are obsessed. They totally kill the excuse used by black men that a brother can’t get a break. That’s one of the biggest lies that black men keep out there. Black guys get breaks all the time. They just want break after break for committing crimes usually against other blacks like it’s no big thing. They have what’s the big deal attitude like Arenas. Grown men who see their immature irresponsible behavior as just having fun and playing around. And that’s another huge problem grown black men still think life is all about playing and having fun without consequences for their actions. They want to have bad behavior and not be punished for it. Arenas is a danger to society and is itching to show his manhood by shooting someone. This man childish behavior is the results of growing up without a real black man who represents what a real black manhood is. To be taught how to realistically maneuver in life as a black man. Too many sadly really believe acting and looking like drop pants homo erotic thug is real black manhood. Going to prison is a rite of passage. Having a gun is being a tough guy ready to shoot any time anywhere no matter who’s in their line of fire. Everything negative is keeping it real. Black players should be humiliated that they had to be told how to dress and how to present themselves when on company business that pays them million. Shameful. An example must be made of Arena so that want to be thugs in the NBA and all of sports get the message. They must be made to see the harm they are doing and the message they are sending to highly influenced weak minded black males with their gun play. These guys need to grow up and man up.

I agee with Mr.Smith. Black men are given the chance to showcase their talents and what does Arenas do? The stupidest thing that I have ever heard a man in the NBA do, bring a gun to his locker room like he is in high school. SMDH when will WE learn?

I have to agree completly with Steven Smith. It's a sad commentary that a NBA star has to put himself and the NBA in such a negative light. I only hope that it can be contained as an isolated incident and not be percieved as the norm for the Wizards or the NBA. Let's hold the guilty people accountable and move on! I'd like to see balanced reporting because the Wizards and indeed the NBA do an awful lot of good things for our society that often does not get reported. I guess I'm saying we don't cut a finger off to make the glove with this incident. fit.

I agree with everything Mr. Smith has said. I am so sick of the antics of some of these black athletes. Unfortunately they are a product of society. Just because they make millions for some, they just can't leave that thuggish mentality behind. With all they have to lose for some reason their brains just don't comprehend that and they do bonehead things such as this. Sad and embarrassing.

Speak the truth Stephen A. Smith!! I can't co-sign what Gilbert Arenas did, i wouldn't give a flip if he was black, green, white, blue or yellow with polka dots. He has all but destroyed his career and embarrassed himself, family and the Wizards organization. He should've had better sense. Some of these athletes don't keep a "good core" of people around them that will tell them the truth and hold them accountable for their actions. Alot of them have hangers on and leeches that is just there for the ride (spend the money and get the honeys). It doesn't matter how much money you make if you have that same "gutter" "thuggish" "bad boy" mentality, then what do you expect. Money don't buy common sense.

I agree with Stephen A Smith a.k.a "my man” Are black men need to grow up and "Lead by Example"...It effects the younger athletes and it alters there judgment. Our professional’s athletes need to understand how much power they have on the younger generation, and act responsible.
