Gilbert Arenas will find out on March 26th whether he will spend time in jail, after pleading guilty in a D.C. Superior Court Friday to a felony count of carrying an unlicensed gun.
Prosecutors in the case said that while the charge carries a five-year jail sentence, they will seek no more than 6 months in jail for the embattled Washington Wizards star. Legal observers have said they expect Arenas, a Los Angeles native, to serve some jail time since this is his second gun conviction in recent years.
Arenas was released after agreeing to surrender his passport and to not to possess handguns.
Arenas, a former all-star, has gained popularity with Washington fans for his amusing blog and goofy demeanor as much as for his game-winning shots from the perimeter.
Now Arenas has become the living embodiment of the saying "more money than brains."
With a Dec. 21 decision to bring four handguns to the Verizon Center locker room, Arenas has thrown his basketball future in to turmoil. His number "0" jersey was the team's top seller. It is no longer sold during home games.
Perhaps more importantly, the Wizards may seek to invalidate his $111 million contract, on which about $80 million remains to be paid.
This all began when Arenas and team mate Javaris Crittenton got in to a heated argument after a card game, and Crittenton allegedly said he should shoot Arenas in the knee. Days later, Arenas placed guns on a chair next to Crittenton's locker, with a note that said to "pick one," according to authorities.
The NBA suspended Arenas indefinitely without pay Jan. 6.
