While NFL fans were enjoying the playoffs over the weekend, the Chicago Bears were mourning the loss of a teammate. On Sunday, Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams passed away after going into cardiac arrest in his hometown of Greenwood, S.C. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Greenwood County Deputy Coroner, Marcia Kelley-Clark, said Adams had an enlarged heart."We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines' passing," the Chicago Bears said in a statement. "Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time."
Adams was traded to the Bears in October by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he was drafted fourth overall in 2007.
"I talked to Gaines a couple of weeks ago," former Buccaneers coach and current 'Monday Night Football' analyst Jon Gruden told the Sun-Times. "I was telling him about [Bears defensive line coach Rod Marinelli], and he was very excited to get a fresh start, and I know Rod was very excited about working with him this off-season. They had big plans for him. You would've liked Gaines. Everybody who knew Gaines liked Gaines. This is a tragic loss for us all."
Adams leaves behind a 5-year-old son and a longtime girlfriend. A funeral date has yet to be announced.
