Last year Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth was charged and convicted of DUI manslaughter, after he hit and killed Mario Reyes as he walked home from work. Stallworth was sentenced to 30 days in jail, only serving 24, and suspended from the NFL for a year. This week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated Stallworth, allowing him to participate in spring workout camps.
"I think he's in a better place than he was," Goodell told the Associated Press. "I think he recognizes what he did and the horrific nature and the unfortunate outcome, and I think he's prepared himself to get back in and play."
The problem is, as soon as the announcement came, the Browns released Stallworth, making him a free agent. In 2008, Stallworth signed a seven-year $35 million contract. Rumors are swirling, however, that the Detroit Lions have called up Stallworth to come work out for the team this week. Although the Lions won't confirm or deny the rumors, they are in desperate need of a wide receiver.
