Shaunie O'Neal, Shaq's ex-wife, has finally decided to open up about her divorce in the latest issue of Essence. She joins the ever-growing list of celebrity ex-wives who use the public tell-all approach as a method of closure for a relationship. It is no coincidence that her willingness to share comes at a time when the show, VH1's "Basketball Wives," she executive produced and stars in is airing; it will air on Monday.
The new series provides a behind-the-scenes look in to the daily lives of wives, girlfriends and baby mamas of NBA ballers-sure to be an extension of the mess that is "Housewives of [insert city here]": There's jealousy, bling, groupies and drama.
Shaunie filed for divorce in the middle of the show's taping, but her story will still be included.
Here are some details she reveals in the interview with Essence:
On the multiplying force of groupies:
Miami is a great city. It just wasn't a great city for our marriage. I know they say L.A. has its groupies, but Miami has a different mentality. Even going to the games, the whole environment is so different. Girls are practically sitting in their bra and panties in the arena. When you're trying to keep your husband, that's a lot to take. It was a whole new lifestyle I wasn't ready for. Apparently we didn't have a strong enough foundation for Shaq to withstand that type of temptation.
Shaunie on confronting Shaq about cheating:
He would deny it sometimes, and other times he would ask, 'You got pictures? Video? If not, don't come at me because you have no proof.' "He'd say, 'Okay, you're mad. Now what? You're not going anywhere.
On being accused of cheating on Shaq with her personal trainer:
I worked out at home- with my trainer, my sister, her husband and my girlfriend. I was a good girl. I wouldn't even entertain a man flirting with me. I was that conservative. But when those rumors came out, I felt I was so small and Shaq was so big that it didn't matter what I said; nobody was going to believe me. All I was thinking was, How could this happen to me? I had no idea how I was going to pick up the pieces. I was just done.
On her relationship with Shaq now:
We are becoming friends, and it's nice because it's something we really lacked in our marriage. I enjoy being able to talk openly to him, and I think we both learned a lot from each other during this time.
What do you think about celebrities or politician's wives making a buck with tell-alls after the divorce? Is it therapy or revenge?

I'm not saying that she's innocent. Shaunie had a career in television before she met Shaq. She was working when Shaq met her. Do your research before you assume. Being a celebrity doesn't excuse improper behavior for a married individuals. He should have been straight up in the beginning and asked for an open marriage. Then, both of them would be free to be whores.

I blame Shaq for his failed marriage. If he is a man he has to take responsibility for any problem in his marriage. Fool, your wife is a beautiful woman and you know this. What are you looking for? I know you lust for the groupies. They look good but are not worth loosing a wife. Talking about defeating the purpose. you give up a wife, friend, mother, soulmate, and life long companion for a piece of ass. Foolish fool. Shaunie may have been a gold digger but she became a wife. Shaq married er and she is mrs oneil and should be treated as mrs oneil. i hope the two of you and work it out. Get Jesus

All these "gold digger" comments are out of line. I don't know many that are willing to have 5 children with a man and try to stick with him over years and years. I believe she did her best to try to have a happy marriage, but it definitely takes 2 to make that happen. After all the crap he put her through, she deserves some restitution for it all. Those calling her a gold digger are mostly haters, and none of us has any idea how it felt for her all those years. Unless you on inside that marriage, you have no clue.

I could only stomach bits of the show Basketball Wives and my heart breaks for any failed marriage. Until we as a society remember the core values of marriage and realize athletes, actors, etc are NOT above morals, this will never change. Everyone talks about how Shaunie didn't play one game and how his money isn't hers. But guess what? Just like Tiger, no one forced these men to get married! If someone wants freedom to sleep around, cheat, etc, then stay single. When you took your marriage vows, you declared that you wanted to be married. Bottom line. No one deserves to be cheated on or lied to...or worse, exposed to deadly diseases. I pray the children don't grow up to repeat what they're seeing. And even though these wives did not earn the millions, who do you think was watching the kids while dad was playing? (besides the nannies?) The wives.

It is well know that she CHEATED on her first husband with Shaq which is how they got together. This chick hypocriticaly talking about girls tempting her husband, yet she was the groupie hoe that cheated on her husband to get with Shaq. Shaq really never respected her becuase he knew that she was a scut hoe when he got with her so why would he be faithful to her. She was NOT faithful to her first husband. Talking about good girl. Yeah right.
