Arenas Finally Gets It: I Deserve Punishment

The light bulb of intelligence in Gilbert Arenas' head, that light that's been dim for years and was shut off completely a few months ago when he brought guns in to his basketball locker room, might be showing signs of life.

Arenas told Esquire magazine he now understands he deserves to be punished for bringing guns in to the Washington Wizards locker room in what he says was a prank on a teammate in December.

Now maybe Arenas also grasps that 2 plus 2 equals 4.

The former all-star guard pleaded guilty to a felony gun-possession charge in January and will be sentenced next week. Most observers expect a short jail term, since this is Arenas' second gun charge in recent years.

The National Basketball Association has suspended him until the end of the season.

Arenas also told Esquire that his gun antics have sullied the memory of Wizards owner Abe Pollin, who died in November. Ironically, Pollin changed the name of the Wizards from the Bullets several years ago, because he was concerned about the rise in gun violence in the world.

Arenas has avoided the news media spotlight since his January plea. That's probably for the best since Arenas has shown a knack for making a bad situation worse.

Shortly after bringing the guns to his locker room and getting the public ridicule that comes with such a stupid act, Arenas walked the court with his teammates and joked about the gun, making shooting gestures with his fingers toward the crowd.

That was when NBA commissioner David Stern really got mad and suspended Arenas, saying he wasn't fit to play on the court.

The Esquire article will hit newsstands next week.
