On this rainy day, only the resolute are in the Energy Fitness Center in Baltimore getting in their evening workout. In the corner of the gym, Ernestine Shepherd lends credence to the adage "age ain't nothing but a number."
Five days a week, she trains women of all ages -- three days at Energy gym and two days at her church, where she has a class of 25.
"I usually start off with about 15 minutes of cardio, running in place, then we do floor exercises working on the abs, legs, upper and lower obliques, and then we proceed with the weights," she says about her training sessions, which last about an hour.
Some days, even her trainer, Raymond Day, can't keep up with her.
Though he runs with her some mornings, he is reluctant to take her up on offers to participate in the marathons she runs in. In addition to her regular workout routine and training others, Shepherd has participated in numerous 5K and 10K races and marathons.
It wasn't until she turned 56 that she began to exercise with the aid of her sister. They were both spurred on to join a gym after shopping for bathing suits and thinking they didn't like what they saw in the mirror.

What are you talking about?!? At 73, her face is fantastic! Unless we are planning on surgery, you and I can only hope to look that good at her age.

Sorry, she does not look half her age. She doesn't look as old as she is, but not half. She looks good. And, yes, genes has a great deal to do with it. And health and work life.

I want to know what she eats ! I am a 40 yr old man that should weigh in at about 165-180.......I'm 230 and carry all the wight on my gut & chest, have for the most part sworn off red meat & milk, and when I can afford it I buy Organic meats and veggies, drink a fruit smoothie everyday, walk 5 miles 3 times a week, I have ONE WEAKNESS though.....CHEEEEESE.....and in excess.
If I could only swear off cheese. HELP!

I, too, love cheese in many varieties. You can have a little now and then, but don't overdo it. If you deny yourself the pleasure of having something wonderful like cheese...in moderation...you won't be happy and happiness is crucial to losing weight and keeping it off. Good luck, my friend.

Fantastic, as for the idiot talking about her face, what do you look like in the body? You can cover your face with make up but you can't hide fat or muffins or love (yuck) handles.

I think she looks fantastic. I just turned 56 and I exercised a lot when I was younger. I guess I can't use the excuse that I'm too old anymore. She has given me the inspiration to get up and get moving! I'm just disappointed that this website is called Black Voices. I'm white and loved the article. Black people are always screaming for equality and yet as long as you continue to have BET, Black College Forum, Black Voices, and many other organizations specifically for black people there will always be a division of races. If white people had a website called White Voices you would be screaming racism. As far as I'm concerned this website is a form of reverse racism. I'm not a racist I'm just stating my opinion.

Marit, if you don't like it. Leave! NO one told you to come to the site. And as far as "white voices", you do have it, but it's called, KKK, Skin Heads, Tea Party, etc. Get my drift? Can't we have anything without you all trying to take over?

Angie: You've proved my point.
Angie: You've proved my point exactly. I knew that someone would bring up extremist groups. First of all, the caption on my AOl homepage said 73 year old woman looks half her age. I had no idea this was a black website until I clicked on the link. Secondly, I had only nice things to say about this woman and I have no desire to join those extremist groups you mentioned although I agree with the Tea Parties for ALL Americans. If we don't do something now there will be more illegals in our country than actual Americans. You should be worried too. Someday we'll be just another third world country and that would be detrimental to all of us.
