Last November, sports fans were surprised to see one of their favorite former Major Leaguers with a considerably lighter skin tone. Slugger Sammy Sosa, a black Latino from the Dominican Republic, appeared to have bleached his skin to have a lighter complexion. People accused him of self-hate and denying his African roots. Sosa denied all the allegations and said that a skin rejuvenation cream, which he was considering sponsoring, changed his epidermis.
Now, according to the New York Post, Sosa's deal with the skin cream company is off, and he's rocking his black skin once again. The Post reports that Sosa was down in Miami at club Liv, at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach, back to his old skin color. Let's hope so. There's nothing to be ashamed of, Sammy!
There's a long and troubling history in Caribbean islands, such as the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Cuba, in which Latinos of African descent deny their African roots. In the 2000 census, more than 80 percent of the population in Puerto Rico identified themselves as white.
It's no secret that in a lot of Latin American countries, the lighter you are, the more you are respected in society. That type of mentality causes many to be ashamed of their dark skin. There's also the discontent of Afro-Latinos, who aren't interested in being grouped in with American blacks. The best way to do that then is to lighten your skin, right?
Hopefully by now, Sosa may have had an awakening and embraces his skin color and his African roots.

I think Sammy was just a little confused. It is true that a lot of Afro/Latino people want to be lighter skinned. It's just that old ingrained slave mentality that lighter is better. It's really sad. I don't think African people are ever going to get over it.

first, dark skin blacks don't hate light skinned blacks or visa versa. the problem is that blacks were first hunted and hated for no reason for being their complexion...so being black was like a "no no" so we as a people began to run from who we are. I am only 48 years old and I remember going to certain areas of town in California and would be told by whites, to " get out of here n*gga! we don't wont you around here". so being black was like a "hide your face"...their coming, kind of thing. so most blacks went around subconsciously thinking that they needed to either be lighter or get with a lighter person and tone down the family complexion. well that's why you started seeing dark blacks chase light blacks and visa versa, now since we have been " free" we have tried to come outside the race and see how that feels ... the same and worse ...because, now dating white people, is a form of trickeration for most blacks because black people subconsciously think that some how dating whites will make the world respect you now and they might finally see you as a" human being" . well news flash! they don't respect you now and all they really want from you blacks is..."for you to save them" they are a sinking race! while you are thinking of lightening your generational skin to be more liked...you are really denying your own powers of the blackness. being black means actually having power! the rest of the world knows this ,but we blacks don't even know that while we are trying to chase them ...they are chasing us...they know we are the future. everything they tried to discourage us with ...they go and buy! they said you blacks got " big lips" well botox is their friend now. and then they said all your women have big buts... and they (white women)are buying/ renting assses trying to be us,and using trickuration to make us think we are not the one. well guess what black people "we are the stuff of the future!!! well, they might say "why are all your men dating white women then if you are the stuff?". well its like this...men are slower than women ...we knew massa wasn't sh*t on the slave quarters,and that's why you saw the women boldly speaking out to massa on occasions, where on the other hand the black man was a "yes sir boss" having mentality brother, and he didn't want no trouble. so when they set the black man free ,he still had it in his mind that the white women could some how make his being here better. well , I guess you have to get the same lesson all black men get...leave those broke a*s folks alone . they just want to be with are man because they know are men are strong bucks who worked for them and made them rich so they are in hopes that this is the same slave ...and maybe he will work hard making her rich again...and he did...his name is tiger woods, Dennis rodman , Lamar odams, on the list goes on. but isn't it strange that after they try this trash, the broke white race always think we owe them something? black men had better wake up!~!!! we are the future!!! keep the money in the family!!!! we are not to help them at all!!!! this is our time and our race is about to inherit the future...so Sammy this is not the time to want to be white...this aint even the time to want to be mixed ...your blackness is your strength. now look how good Sammy looks in black then he does in white...the blacker the better, the sweeter the juice!!!! its time to rise to the occasion...BLACK IS BACK!!!

You see, it's not just our men seeking white women, but you white men are seeking black women as well.
