Kobe Bryant
's final basket of the night, a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the Los Angeles Lakers' 102-89 win against the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, had an important symbolic value.
It pushed the Lakers past the 100-point mark, an unusual accomplishment against Boston's defense. In 17 previous playoff games this year, the Celtics had allowed 100 points four times.
"We take a lot of pride in our defense," Boston's Paul Pierce told reporters after last night's game. "It wasn't a typical losing locker room. There were some angry people in there. We can deal with losing because it's part of the game, but we can't deal with it when we play the way we did tonight."
Bryant scored 30 points, and Pau Gasol had 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Lakers to victory as the teams renewed one of sports' most celebrated rivalries.
Game 2 will be played June 6 in Los Angeles. The series then shifts to Boston.
