Minnesota's Black Cyclists Unite for Bike Festival
Anthony Taylor, founder of Major Taylor Bicycling Club of Minnesota, is making sure that more black folks get on bikes and get their ride on. Last weekend he organized a bike festival in St. Paul, Minnesota, where bikes were given away, rides were taken through a park and BMX demonstrations were held. Taylor is intent on dismissing the myth that black folks don't enjoy bike riding.

"...We have to say that isn't true, because I know the African American community is focused on improving their quality of life, improving their health, and we see the bike as a solution to that," he told Minnesota Public Radio.

Taylor's bicycling club was named after Indiana's Major Taylor, the first black bicyclist who became a world champion in the 1800s. He was famous in Europe and raced around the world but died broke and unknown. His autobiography was written by Andrew Richie in 1988 which brought some notoriety to Major Taylor's name. Since then, Major Taylor bicycle clubs have been popping up all over the nation.

"You have to remember he's doing this at a time where it's a completely unique thing for a black guy to take on his white rivals and to thoroughly thrash them," Ritchie said about Major Taylor's accomplishments. "He rode away from them and they didn't like it one bit."
