Tiger Woods Can't Sell Video Games Anymore

It turns out that Tiger Woods' fall from grace is starting to hit his bank account. It's also starting to bang away at the finances of those who've invested in him the most. According to GameIndustry.biz, sales of Woods video games have dropped by 68 percent across all platforms. The heaviest drop has been in the sales of his Nintendo Wii games, which dropped by 86 percent. This has set off alarm bells for those who thought that Woods was America's greatest cash cow.

I never expected to see Tiger take such a tumble. In fact, I was sure that once he got back on the golf course, everything would be just fine. It turns out that Tiger's return to golf has been less than memorable, and we're all being served with the opportunity to watch him slowly drop off to something he hasn't been since he was 21 years old: full of potential but highly inconsistent.

While Tiger is still a very good golfer, this is not going to help him sell products. The ability to sell products is largely based on your public image and how much America likes you. For example, in the Olympics, there are many occasions when the silver medalist gets more endorsements than the gold medalist, since the decisions on Madison Avenue can be based on looks, personality and charisma.

Tiger has lost a great deal of ground when it comes to being identified as a disciplined and ultimately "good" human being. Even if he were still a great golfer, his Wii sales would have declined substantially, since being great doesn't matter if soccer moms don't like you. Those who purchase the Wii are not hardcore video game fanatics, and they not hypercompetitive relative to those who might purchase an Xbox or Playstation 3. So, the image of Tiger as the anti-family man is certainly going to keep his Wii games on the shelf.

The sole redeeming aspect of the life of Tiger Woods is that it appears he has been financially responsible during his career. He's not some ignorant prize fighter who goes on million-dollar shopping sprees or a rapper who feels that he needs to have 10 Bentleys to maintain his public image. He's a guy with a few hundred million dollars in the bank, so he's ultimately going to be just fine.
