I don't normally agree with Jason Whitlock, a writer in Kansas City. But Jason was right on the money when he recently wrote a piece explaining that Reggie Bush is effectively the Kunta Kinte of the NCAA. After finding a way to escape the confines of the inexcusably exploitative system of collegiate athletics, he had his athletic foot cut off when he was stripped of his Heisman Trophy. What's so interesting about this system is that none of the NCAA regulators who enforce the system would themselves be interested in working under such nonsensical conditions. The proceeds from their 14-year, $10.8 billion dollar television rights deal are earned on the backs of athletes, many of them poor and black. The money often ends up in the hands of wealthy, white administrators/coaches or students in non revenue-generating sports like tennis and golf, most of whom are white. This is a direct wealth extraction out of the black community. The reason the injustice is allowed by Congress is largely because people figure that black men should be happy with whatever they get.
Walter Byers, the former Executive Director for the NCAA wrote in his book (Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Exploiting the Student-Athlete) that college athletes were being harmed in a multitude of ways by the system of collegiate athletics. Byers admitted that he spent nearly three decades taking the organization in the wrong direction, and made it clear that college athletes should be fairly compensated for their labor just like the rest of us. In a world where child actors like Angus T. Jones (Two and a Half Men) earn over $250,000 per episode, why is it not the case that Reggie Bush, who drew more viewers and fans than Angus, can have his reputation destroyed over five or ten thousand dollars, while his coach rakes in over $4 million?
The NCAA is one of the most racist and exploitative systems in American history. There really is no way around it. At some point in the not-so-distant future, some attorney is going to make himself famous by winning a multi-billion dollar verdict against the NCAA for it's anti-trust violations and illegal restrictions on the labor rights of their fellow Americans. That will be the day when the world becomes a little fairer than it is right now, and so-called academic institutions can actually return to the act of educating young people, rather than pretending to do so.

Last time I checked, it hadn't been decided if Bush would have to return his Heisman Trophy. USC gave back their replica of it as a symbolic gesture.

You are right. USC gave back its Heisman kept on campus. Last I heard, the Heisman Trust, were leaning toward taking no action against Bush because of his work in the in lower 9th Ward of NOLA and many other philanthropic endeavors. The Heisman Trust is more of a service related organization than the buffoons at the NCAA. Besides he did out perform all the other candidates.
Sure Reggie knew the rules, as did Pete Carroll, Mike Garrett and even more so, Reggie's greedy Step-father, who are all walking around with clean hands and fat bank accounts. If anyone would really listen to what Bush's response has always been, its a clue that his Step-father was most likely the one behind all of the allegations against Bush. Reggie was probably protecting the reputation of his mother as would any caring and loving son would do.
Someone needs to get an interview with Reggie Bush, Sr. I wonder what he has to say?

Reggie Bush knew the rules of the game before he tried to play. Comparing him to Kunte Kinte is a stretch because he's doing just fine with his Superbowl ring. He broke the rules and must pay a price. Doing Kim K isn't enough.

A modern day Curt Flood he isn't, but The message is clear. You know, 50 years ago, he would've had to hone his skills in the SWAC or the MEAC. I'd imagine playing for the likes of an Eddie Robinson or a Jake Gaither would've been character building.

Keep it clean peoples.
Some people are barely surviving in the U.S.
When someone presents a person of need with an opportunity to get food in their stomach it's a no win situation.
If Reggie is being stripped of his Heisman Trophy the co-conspirator should also give back all the proceeds $$$$ acquired off of his accomplishments.

The NCAA is ran by Told White men and most D1 college coaches are surprise White men who "earn" in excess of $1 million annually but the majority of the athletes who play the "skill" positions are surprise Black and more often than not poor !
I'm guessing the average 4 year college education is roughly $100,000 and the average annual take of a D1 college football program is surprise multi millions !
Of that amount, "student"-athletes make ZERO while everyone around them make enough money from the athlete's talent to live a comfortable and in some cases privileged life !
Walter Byers, architect of the modern NCAA and past former head of the NCAA, was a staunch right wing conservative who didn't want Blacks on college campuses or in college sports but since he couldn't stop that, he did the next best thing he could and that is he designed a system that degrades and denies Black athletes from earning money from their athletic skills !
Byers firmly believed the the neo-plantation belief that the enormous proceeds from college games belong to the overseers (administrators) and supervisors (coaches). The plantation workers performing in the arena may only receive those benefits authorized by the overseers.” In his old age, Byers admitted creating a monster. His NCAA memoir was his repentance and call for a fundamental overhaul of a corrupt organization.
It's almost akin to someone designing "Windows" for Microsoft and then not being compensated for their skill because they are labeled an "intern" !
The irony here is, if Bush has to give up his Heisman trophy, then shouldn't former USC coach Pete Carroll relinquish the salary he "earned" during the period in question !

Once again, Bush was no Curt Flood in protest of the "Plantation System" of D1 athletics. Bush rode the System for all it was worth. It is, what it is.
If Bush was THAT principled he would have attended a HBCU. I suppose then, the "Plantation" metaphor breaks down into what ... a "Sharecropping" metaphor ...?
