Serena Williams announced that she will not participate in this year's U.S. Open tournament. According to the Associated Press, she's still recovering from cutting her foot earlier this summer. She was hoping to make up for last year's performance at the U.S. Open where she was a favorite to go to the finals but lost in the semi finals to Kim Clijsters on a controversial call. It was so controversial that Williams went off on the lineswoman and threatened her. Because of the outburst, Williams was fined $10,000 by the U.S. Open organizers and then $175,000 by the Grand Slam Committee as well as putting her on a two-year probation.
This year, Williams was ranked No. 1 in the world after her win at the Wimbledon tournament earlier this year. There's no timetable on when she'll be back in action, as she's also missed the WTA season this summer.
But according to Serena's Twitter feed (http://www.twitter.com/serenawilliams), she doesn't seem too bothered by the circumstance. She was most recently bragging about a Louis Vuitton event the other night and tweeted about having a hard time getting out of bed. She was also promoting her recent cover story in Hampton magazine. You won't see another Martina Navratilova again, simply put. Her longevity is in untouchable due to her bein ginjury free for the large portion of her career. Her genetics, body structure and physiology was perfect for the game,

I see sharapova, et. al. has now copied off venus and serena's court style by wearing color on court. Dang, they bite off everything we do. I'll miss seeing serena/venus on the NYC court this season. Hope serena heals fast and strong. Love you serena and venus williams.
