Serena Williams, Venus Williams will not play tennis for rest of 2010

Almost two weeks ago, Venus Williams announced she wouldn't be playing in anymore 2010 tournaments because of a lingering left knee injury and she wanted to heal.

Those pinning their hopes on at least seeing Serena at the WTA Championships in Qatar next week and the Fed Cup in San Diego and Italy next month, will be disappointed to learn that she is also pulling out.
According to the Associated Press, Serena re-tore the tendon in her foot, even though she had surgery in July to repair the injury. It's the same foot that she cut on broken glass at a restaurant over the summer:

"It is with deep frustration that I am withdrawing from the WTA Championships at Doha and the Fed Cup Final," she said in her statement. "Pushed by my desire to return to competition, I trained too hard too soon and re-tore the tendon in my foot. As a result, yesterday morning I had to have another procedure to repair it. I thank everyone for their continued support during this difficult time and look forward with strength and determination to getting back on the court."
2010 only saw Serena Williams play six tournaments. Serena won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

"Serena Williams is one of the great champions of all time, and she will be missed by her many fans at the year end WTA Championships," WTA CEO Stacey Allaster said. "We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back at full strength for the 2011 season."

Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez said in a statement:
"It's unfortunate about Venus and Serena. The team was really looking forward to having them on the team. We wish them a speedy recovery. Our team is excited to be in final for second straight year and we will give it our all as usual and try to pull off another upset."
We're pretty sure that when the sisters do return, they'll pick up where they left off: domination.
