Semenya has been so distraught about her inability to obtain financing that she has resorted to a Facebook campaign to raise money. This is an unusual situation for a world champion athlete, especially in South Africa, where world champs are incredibly rare.
Her manager, Tshepo Seema, said this to the Associated Press:
"We have been to various companies, motor companies, cell phone companies, restaurant chains, a whole range of companies. Caster has been cleared to compete as a female athlete, she should get the opportunity for sponsorship. Companies have said there is a lot of uncertainty around Caster. They have said, 'We can't touch her.'"
Semenya has been requesting small donations of 70 cents from those who support her. Currently, she receives a salary from the South African government and running clothes from a company that sells sportswear. She also has access to training facilities. But the cost of travel to international events can be expensive, which is likely one of her greatest concerns to date.
I'll admit that I wasn't sure what to think about Caster Semenya when I saw her last year. She was suspiciously good at the age of 19 and also seemed to improve her time in an unnatural fashion. Most athletes don't drop their 800-meter run times by eight seconds in one year, and as a former track coach, I've always found these kinds of performances to be driven by something deep and unseemly. But anything is possible, so any accusations had to be fairly investigated. After the gender issue was cleared up, there was still the issue of drug use.
One of the interesting things about the case of Caster Semenya is that many believe performance-enhancing drug use to be rampant throughout track and field. The game seems to be one of cat and mouse, where regulatory authorities are consistently a step behind the chemists who make the drugs. Most champion athletes are obligated to present themselves to the public as being the epitome of clean-living, only to be found out years later. It's an ugly and vicious cycle.
I admit that I am not a fan of drug use in sports. But the problem is that drugs aren't going to go away. Also, if it were somehow the case some drugs are found not to have any serious long-term health consequences, it's hard to argue against their use. At the same time, there's something about the idea of performance-enhancers that takes away from the purity of competition, and that's what bothers us. You can rest assured, however, there is significant drug use taking place throughout track and field, cycling and quite a few other sports. Let's not get it twisted.
As for Caster Semenya, her problem is that in spite of the results of the gender test, there are still people who are suspicious. Perhaps the gender issue has been alleviated, but the drug issue still looms over her head. Her deep voice, adam's apple and sudden improvements are going to make her untouchable in corporate America for a very long time. Even an Olympic gold medal won't make much of a difference.

This "person" is from South Africa. Why is "she" crying the blues about not receiving sponsorship from American companies ? What obligation does American companies have, to sponsor a foreigner?
We can't, nor should we support the whole damn world. And don't give me the old line about "I'll bet if she was white, you'd sponsor her". Nothing to do with her skin color. She's NOT an American and we owe "her" nothing.

Quote by Russell: "This "person" is from South Africa. Why is "she" crying the blues about not receiving sponsorship from American companies ? What obligation does American companies have, to sponsor a foreigner?
The reason why is because foreigners and especially runners from all over Africa, are the best runners in the world and have dominated the world of professional racing for decades and American companies are heavily invested in those African runners because they make the most money winning events, holds virtually every world record in track running, sell the most running shoes and running clothing than any other nationality of people and that American money that invested in foreigh countries where these runners are +LeBron-like" superstars is not concerning Americans (since Americans don't care about pro track and field unless it's the Olympics) so that money is invested outside of the US and profits made throughout the rest of the world like Africa, Germany, Europe and the Middle East where running, track and field is big business.
So for Caster Semenya, she understands that Americans invest their millions of dollars for runnning champions that are not US citizens (we just don't compete) and because of her status as the current 800 meter world record holder despite all her issues with her gender, she is right in her demands to get a piece of the pie.
But she will be fine and get her cut.
See, another example of American business and it dollars being invested overseas to foreign nations and it's people in order to make huge profits without allowing the American people to benefit in having a stake with jobs to produce those items..unless we buy those items from them that are produced overseas...so once again, we lose on both ends.
And if America would invest it's money and time in it's American track and field athletes the same as football, baseball and basketball, then American track & field athletes can have a bigger stake in that multi-billion dollar business.
The only time that we are concerned about them is during the Olympics and that's every 4 years.

She doesnt have a right to demand anything. She isnt "entilted" to American business support.
Business has a right to decide who they will and will not support, and this person has issues, serious baggage. First she is a nobody, this isnt a track and field nation. Second, she apeears to be a man. Sounds like a bad investment to me.
Until Nike, Rebook and Adidas get into the transgender business, she is out of luck.

Brady, why isn't she entitled? because she's not American? Because she not "attractive"? Who determines that?
Because of the effort to determine that she's a man since she totally kicked ass when she became the 800 meter world champion and won by almost 100+ yards when she turned on the jets and left her competitors struggling in her dust?
You see, if she had won that race closely struggling to beat her opponent as opposed to running away with it, the issue of her gender would have never come up.
She dominates the 800 meter field, is not "pretty" according to some bullshyt standards and she's not according to whoever "camera ready"...that's the real problem here and it's all bullshyt.
And that's makes absoluty no sense at all since American money support thousands of foreign athletes all around the world.
The issue here is not investment here in the United States (where no one gives a damn about the sport anyway) but investment abroad since that's where the big dollars are in regards to track and field.
In the US, nobody cares about track runners at all so worrying about what you think about her chances to excel financially being backed by American companies is a mute point but in her homeland and other countries, where champion track runners are idolized and held in high regard is where the big money is....remember, the U.S. s not the sports capital of the world (eventhought Americans think that it is) in regards to world sports outside of American baseball, basketball and American football so American sponsers like Nike, Reebok, German athletic appreal maker Puma and Addais along with many others in other nations will give her the opportunity once she gets busy and begins dominating the field with wins and world records....no matter the athlete, winning talent solves everything and with her talent, it's only a matter of time, she will get paid, a lot of that money will be American and the American public won't even know about it.
So Brady, when she starts to get her huge endorsement deals from American sports companies and makes the big money and since you have a problem with her having success in life, you can organize a protest against Caster Semenya, take your picket signs along with your buddies and protest loudly outside the corporate offices of Nike, Reebok or any other American sport companies that financially backs and supports her....and as you loudly yell and scream in disapproving anger, she will be look down on you from her corner office suite and laugh at your hatin' ass.
