ESPN is reporting that Kenneth Rogers, a player turned sports agent, asked Mississippi State University for $180,000 for the chance to recruit Newton. When Rogers asked for the money, Mississippi State turned his name in to the Southeastern Conference, and the investigation began. Auburn University hasn't taken Newton off the field, although they've known about the investigation for quite some time.
Here we go again. Now that yet another case of an athlete getting paid has hit the airwaves, there will be a parade of racist and self-righteous sports writers condemning the athletes for being corrupt, as well as their parents or any representatives from their community who are simply trying to get paid like everybody else. ESPN, Auburn University and the NCAA earn millions from athletes like Cam Newton, but for some reason, they don't think that Cam and his family have the right to do the same thing. Can we say the word "slavery" anyone?
Let's keep it honest for just one second. First, Cam Newton is not the only NCAA player getting money under the table, nor is Kenneth Rogers the only "agent" being paid by a university. These schools realize that the presence of a Cam Newton on their campus is going to generate tens of millions of extra dollars in television deals, jersey sales, corporate sponsorships and bowl appearances. If Cam and his mother are struggling to buy the things they need, why in the heck does it make any lick of sense for them to be left off this massive financial gravy train?
Secondly, the black market of athlete compensation is never going to die as long as we hold the misguided belief that athletes and their families should be excluded from the enormous compensation that their sons are earning in professional (yes, I did say professional) NCAA basketball and football. The NCAA earns money on par with every professional sports league in America, athletes are brought to campus as hired guns to earn revenue, and many of them have their educations significantly disrupted so they can go out on the field and earn money for someone other than their own families. This system is probably the most corrupt and structurally racist institution in America right now, right alongside the prison system.
If Cam Newton and his family got money under the table, then good for them. In fact, they deserve a hell of a lot more than $180,000, given Cam Newton's multi-million dollar value to Auburn University. The only crime in this is that they won't receive part of the $2.1 million that Auburn football coach Gene Chizik is going to earn this year as a result of his ability to bring Cam Newton to campus. Please allow me to quote directly from the Birmingham News:
"Auburn head coach Gene Chizik and his assistants have cashed in on a winning 2009 season and a Top 5 finish in recruiting with raises that will keep the staff among the highest paid in the Southeastern Conference."
Translation: the coaches get wealthy because they win games. They can't win games without players like Cam Newton. They are now the highest paid in the SEC because of players like Cam Newton. They received a massive raise because they had a powerful recruiting class with players like Cam Newton leading the charge. They are ranked #3 in the country largely because of Cam Newton, and will receive raises and bonuses based on Cam Newton's performance. If you think this system makes sense, then you're either living in the wrong country or in the wrong century. There's nothing fair about any of this, because the families being used by this system deserve some of this compensation too. The NCAA is a textbook example of systematic racism, where institutions are designed to keep African Americans out of the wealth pool, yet they are the ones producing much of the labor to keep the system alive. Most of the wealthy NCAA coaches are white, while many of the best unpaid athletes are black. This tells you where America is when it comes to race, and the case of Cam Newton is yet another example of just how far we need to go.
When Gene Chizik gives back his $2.1 million, then Cam Newton's mother should give back her $180,000. Her son is doing all the work, so her family should receive benefits that are reflective of a free American labor market. In other words, they should take all the money they can get, because a system as corrupt as this one does not deserve anyone's respect.

Usually I agree with your comments, but this one is missing some facts, because Cam parents have turned over their bank records and church records to show that they have not recieved money from anybody. However, just because somebody else is doing something in your name that does not mean you know anything about what they are proposing. On the other hand, I do feel the players should be compensated for their, but as long as it is against the NCAA violations they should not risk a few dollars for what they would make as a professional player.

Blah, blah, blah. Here we go again with the poor black college athlete and his family need to get paid. What about all the white, latino, Indian, japanise, chinese, On and on and on. You can't just pay the black athlete, you will have to pay them all! Swimming, diving, fencing, polo, lacrosse, football, basketball, volleyball, chess, alltrack and field sports, wrestling, did I forget any you jerk! Keep telling people that you recieved a doctorate, then people will be able to tell why this country is going down hill. If your boy wants to be a coach tell him to try out. College is for learning doctor Boyce not athletics. When he becomes a professional then he makes the money. Got it dummy! How many more times are we going to read you retoric about college blacks not recieving money. You can talk until you are blue, Athletes in college will never get paid no matter how much you rant and rave, no matter what color thay are, so drop it!

"Bob" I think we could take you seriously if you could spell. One should not refer to anyone as "dummy" until they have learned that "i" comes before "e" except after "c".
I'm willing to bet you're one of those hypocrites that says "we don't believe in the redistribution of wealth" while you admit that football and basketball cover those ancillary collegiate sports - redistribution of wealth at its finest.
If you had attended college, which I'd have to bet against, you would know that education is the last thing a university or coaching staff is interested in.
Dr. Watkins, as much as I agree with you about payment of college athletes and the free market, I also realize that the universities will fight paying athletes with every resource they have. Be it prostitution or college athletics, it's hard out here for a pimp.

It is so sad the previous commenter just can't understand the basis of this article, otherwise he would have understood that Dr. Watkins wasn't suggesting that ONLY black NCAA athletes get paid.
Be that as it may, there are essentially two sports that are NCAA money making machines -- football and basketball -- and it is plain as black and white to see the disparity of who collectively is getting rich and who is not. And it is also plain to see that the tainted target is always the black athlete (perpetuated of course by a typical ESPN investigation which typically scapegoats black athletes instead of the higher ups). Those who get peanuts get excoriated (se OJ Mayo), those who make billions get a pass.
And if you believe "college is for learning", then you should believe that NCAA sports should not be televised either. You would be appalled at the time commitment each week that NCAA football takes away from "college learning". And then you would also support a sophisticated professional minor leagues for basketball and football the same way there is for baseball. But you say none of these things.
"Athletes will never get paid..." as long as people like you criticize the messenger instead of comprehending the message.

modi you don't get it and you and boyce never will because of you racism. the athlete signs a contract. You do know what that is right? When he breaks that contract there is consequences you get that right? Most of the black athletes can't even spell athlete. So it would be impossable for them to attend college at any level if it were not for their athletic ablility. You can't have your cake and eat it too! You and Boyce should lobby for a minor league football and basketball league if that is what you want for the black race. Of course Boyce and you are talking only about blacks since when has boyce ever talked positive about whites ever! By the way the rich always will always get what they want black or white on earth. You and Boyce will not stop it. I say if you cannot pass the entrance exam you don't get into college regardless of race or sports ability. After all in peewee and highschool you have to have a c to even compete regardless of how fast you are. I think that would solve all the problems of course then you would complain that the tests are biased against african americans right?!

Recently, I often quarrel with my husband. I think we have no way to continue to live longer. I find he has new girlfriend and always go to "sugarsmingle.CxxxOxxxM" for fun. I went to that site to have a look and found many young beauties and wealthy guys. Should I divorce my husband? Should I have to go to this site to look for real love?

There are way to many African American that own there own companys pay there own way and oh yea run the country smart man. Don't you remember president obama,Oprah,Jay z just to name a few.P.s as a black woman business owner ( www.intimateandsexy.com )the hole stament seemed crazy!!!
