The best thing about most sports is that the result is settled on a scoreboard.
Yes, there are a few exceptions like figure skating (and we all know that's not really a sport, right?), where the subjective and sometimes biased opinions of a judge can make the difference between winning and losing.
But generally, all one has to do is look at the scoreboard to tell who wins and who loses.
That same logic should be applied in the controversy over Auburn University quarterback Cam Newton and his controversial Heisman Trophy campaign.
On-the-field performance is usually the sole measuring stick for who wins the Heisman, which is given to the best college football player in the land.
But this year, with allegations swirling around Newton that he tried to get Mississippi State University to pay him a six-figure fee to attend that school in violation of NCAA rules, some folks are saying Newton should be disqualified from Heisman consideration.
These folks are also using allegations that Newton left the University of Florida in 2008, because he was caught cheating on tests and that he was arrested for stealing a laptop from a fellow student, to "prove" that Newton isn't Heisman worthy.
The fight over Newton's suitability for the Heisman has taken on special importance this year since 2005 Heisman winner Reggie Bush of the University of Southern California was forced to return his award this year, after investigators found he accepted illegal payments from boosters.
Cam Newton might be shown to be a dirty guy when all the investigations are done, but for now, all we can do is look at the scoreboard, which shows that he is by far the best college football player this year.
His combination of passing accuracy, running ability and size at the quarterback position make him a threat from anywhere on the field.
It is entirely possible that the Heisman committee folks will be asking Newton for their trophy back in a few years if investigators find the ugly rumors about his cheating and payment scandals to be true.
But for now, Heisman voters need to look up at the scoreboard. They will see that Newton, as a result of his play on the field this year, deserves the Heisman Trophy.

If stats is what the rules say they go by, then stats it is. If character and past discressions are a consideration, then all who qualify must undergo the same treatment. If all rumors are intivestgated on one, then on all. Why can't we just be fair and play by the rules set upfront. We always won't to change the rules late in the game.

bugaloo,
I would totally agree but the real issue here is not the student athlete with talent, but the entire NCAA system from top to bottom that's knowingly corrupt and in the case of Cam Newton, the entire college athletic program all across the nation is corrupt because all these university/college presidents, athletic directors and all coaches, not matter the level of Division college play, know that that big money flows like red blood throughout their system that sets these young, mostly inner city, naive struggling kids up for failure in regards to all thr monies and perks that they receive under the table and a majority of these dollars comes from known university/college alumini and boosters who contribute major money to their institutions and in addition, assist in getting those hightly recruited college players in all sports to sign that full ride scholarship and play for that university or college and if the player has the potential and skill of Cam newton, then he gets the shaft when that money suddendly shows up and is offered to him while those Presidents, athletic directors and coaches turn a blind eye and blame the athlete while that young man or woman gets set up for a hard fall but the institution gets their multi- millions in TV contracts revenue, concessions, ticket sales and bowl games and NCAA tournment appearances on the sweat of that athlete.
This has been going on since the inception of college sports and with all the NCAA violations that has occured to virtually every First Team, All American athlete who abilities has won championship year in and year out with a pro career on the horizon, they why hasn't anything been done to throughly investigate and identify these infractions against these students.
They know that the money is out there for the taking and after the multitudes of infractions over the past 30 years, the blame is still placed squarely on the student athlete and no one else and if you consider the case of New Orleans Saints Reggie Bush who won the Heisman Trophy at USC but had it stripped from him this years for NCAA infractions while playing at USC does not convince me that it was totally all his fault and no one else knew absoluty nothing when his coach was not fined or accused but ended up leaving USC scot free and got a head coach job in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks.
Just how does this situation keep happening year after years all across university campuses and only those student athletes are the only ones guilty? They have a serious "problem" but refuses to do anything to fix it because "fixing it" will not get you that highly prized high school recruit or keep him at your school....and if you don't have him, then those schools make no money.

Newton is undeniably, without a doubt the best QB in this country. He DESERVES the Heisman. If anybody saw that game yesterday, came back from a 24 point deficit and beat Bama. It was unreal. Bama fans are still in shock and disbelief. Everything else they are saying about Cam is nothing more than mere allegations. They can't knock the man's game so they attempt to smear his character. How sad to base voting decisions on hearsay. Where is the proof? Oh, they claim the text messages got erased when the cell phone fell in the toilet. Give me a break. Look at the source of the "so-called" allegations. I heard from a friend of a friend who knows someone that heard from a reliable source that Cam Newton took some money.....blah, blah, blah. By the way, you couldn't pay me to go to Miss. State either and I don't even play football.
