"My goal is to be the undisputed world champion one more time before I let it go. Once I do that, I sit down," said Holyfied. "And until I do that, I continue to fight."
Holyfield currently has a record of 43-10-2. This would be a nice career for most fighters, but unfortunately, it appears that Holyfield isn't ready to put away the gloves. One great concern are the long-term health issues that can come from being nearly 50 years old and getting pounded in the head for a living. I personally don't want to watch Holyfield decline in the same way as Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes.
Sadly enough, Evander Holyfield is enduring the fate of quite a few black athletes before him. With most of his money squandered and no other marketable skills, fighting is all that Evander can do. So, rather than watching him walk off into the sunset, his fans get the "pleasure" of seeing him decay right before their very eyes. It's sad to see, but oh so familiar.
Holyfield's financial problems are well-publicized. Over the past two years, his $10 million dollar estate has gone into foreclosure, and one of the mothers of his 11 children sued him for back child support. Overspending, a lack of education and fathering too many children with too many women are recipes for disaster for nearly every black athlete (or white athlete for that matter).
I am not one to condemn Evander Holyfield or anyone else, since everyone makes mistakes. But there has to be a point where black athletes learn from one another and stop making the same mistakes as their predecessors. Rather than fighting or playing basketball until we become tired old men, it might be more productive for us to retire into other careers that don't involve sports. Black men can be so much more than athletes.

Natural talent coupled with an extremely dedicated training regime created this amazing champion.
So sad to perceive him as not realizing he's been slow to react and taking alot of hard shots to the head lately.
Muhammed Ali was a good comparison...So sad.

Evander Holyfield must be either desperate or in unsually good shape to consider fighting again at his age. One has to know when one's prime is over.

The idea of a 48 yo still be able to box gives this soon to be 47 yo some hope as I've always been fit and I'm kinda surprised to find out I don't feel that much different than I've always felt. I now just continue to maintain (or get better).
Problem is boxing wears one down (ages one) just by the very nature of the sport. Holyfield looks 60 to me and looks as if he's suffered brain damage (as most boxers will). If there were a way to prevent the brain damage, I think a late 40s guy could comfortably compete. Hell, Randy Couture is 48 and a fit 28 yo wouldn't want to get in fisticuffs with him (or Holyfield) unless one is trained.
Alright medical science, I want to keep performing at my youthful rate so hurry up with those pharmaceuticals that turn back the clock. 47 aint no joke.

Although sad that at 48 he finds that he has to subject his body the further punishment, good luck to him. George Forman did it. I don't know if he was 48, but he certainly made a middle age comeback, and worked that into a million dollar franchise of tv commercials, cooking utensils and cookbooks, etc. Holyfield lived and extravagant, excessive lifestyle and is also supporting or was supporting a whole lot of kids. I hope this time he will be wiser because we only have one body.

George Forman quit boxing for about 10 years before he went back and then he only fought for about 5 years...and he's a millionaire, so he doesn't have to fight anymore.

That's because Foreman is has common sense. He invested his career and money in endorsements and his life in God. He has a career as a ringside commentator and he took care of his responsibilities to his kids rather than just discriminately impregnating a gang of women he didn't care about. He stopped boxing at 48. Holyfield needs to follow suit or he's gonna end up a joke like Tyson. Or worse getting himself killed. The poor man can't even speak properly now. I think he's had enough head trauma. I hope the commission decides to not take his petitions to continue fighting so he doesn't die in the ring or end up a vegetable.
