To say that Tiger Woods was an influence on golfer Joseph Bramlett is an understatement.
Bramlett, a biracial kid who hung posters of Tiger Woods on his wall, is the first Black man to graduate from the PGA Tour's qualifying school to earn a spot on the 2011 PGA Tour. The top 25 scores of the qualifying school tournament earns a spot on the PGA tour and Bramlett started the day in 33rd place but was able to secure a spot by working his way up to a tie for 16th place.
"It's an honor. It truly is an honor," the 22-year-old
Bramlett told the Associated Pressabout being the first African American to make the PGA tour through the school. "Like I've said before, it's been a long time. I'm just thrilled to see it start to change."
Even Tiger Woods is excited about the achievement. He commented on Bramlett's accomplishment through Twitter.
"Congrats to Joe Bramlett for making it through Q School," Tiger wrote. "Amazing feat considering he sat out a whole year with wrist injury. Can't wait to play with him next season."
According to the Associated Press, Bramlett grew up in just outside of San Jose with a Black father and white mother. His parent used to usher him around the local golf courses among the stares and wonderment of a mostly white environment.
"I never doubted it would happen," he said. "This has been my dream since I was a little kid."
