Back in 2006, speed skater Shani Davis made headlines for being the first black athlete to win a gold medal in an individual sport at the Winter Olympics.
And that win wasn't a fluke.
For the last two years, Davis has been dominating the 1,000 meter race, winning 15 consecutive races. That is until last weekend. Davis' win streak came to an end in Obihiro, Japan, when he came in second behind Samuel Schwarz of Germany.
"I'm glad it's over,'' Davis said in a U.S. Speedskating press release. "I was hoping to improve today, but this will give me something to work on when I go home.''
Regardless of the loss, Davis still holds the world record in the 1,000-meter race at 1:06.42. He also still holds records in the 1,500 meter race and the samalog, a scoring system in speed skating. The Chi-town native will compete next in Salt Lake City at the U.S. Championships, which takes place December 30th through January 4th.
