I often feel sorry for the women I see on shows like "Basketball Wives." Many of them find that for the uneducated athlete who doesn't make responsible choices, hitting your thirties and forties effectively leads to one lucid nightmare after another. The fairytale expected while dating these men during college doesn't quite play out to what you thought it would be. There's a nasty culture among professional athletes, and far too many black male athletes (influenced by hip hop culture) think that being able to dribble a basketball means that they are devoid of any mandate for personal responsibility, educational achievement or financial accountability. The glee of professional athletics, in many cases, leaves behind an ugly and unfortunate mess.
One person that I brought in to discuss this issue is Shanelle Walker, aka Madam Prezident. Beyond being an amazing spoken word and hip hop artist, Shanelle has strong opinions on important matters of social commentary. One thing she's taken issue with recently is the "Basketball Wives" TV show and the examples being set for young black women.
The interview is below, enjoy!

I ain't seen it, but I believe it is just colored girls acting foolish like Atlanta housewives, trying to get noticed. This is good, when I feel like hearing girlies whine, bitch and moan I do believe I will watch it so I can laugh my guts out like I do when I watch most of the 'coonshows'.

Thank you for that and I agree with you totally. The Basketball Wives do not represent all black women. Just as these women on BW flaunt their wealth, they seem to be so unhappy and seem to have banked on the pro athletes for their financial security, therefore losing themselselves in process, i.e. Jennifer Williams. I do believe that some set out to use their looks to bag an athlete and then ended up in a mess. As an educated, finacially stable black woman, and having friends who are black women, we are certainly not like those pathetic women who don't know which end is up and that show is not representative of the average one of us at all. There are great black women of stature that are known and young ladies can look up to, Oprah, Michelle Obama, etc.

Uuuuuum, all races act like that... not just black women. I could give a damn as long as it don't affect me personally. If this is the image these women want to put out of themselves.. by all means, do you! Why do so many black people care about how other races view us? How often do we see black women killing their children, husbands, or parents for a little bit of change? I'm proud to be a black woman, no matter how other races view us!

Thank Isutemdown, this is a reflection on them and them alone. If anyone things or believes all Black women act like that then they would have to believe that all Black women act like Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Halle Berry, Whoopie Goldberg, Star Jones, Alicia Keys, Beyonce Knowles, and the list could goes on and on.

I agree with you to a degree but the problem is with other races, particularly, our white counterparts you can change the channel and see them in other characters. You'll see them in positive roles such as Cops and Drs. Lawyers and even victims that viewers have empathy for. Black Women roles in media is limited. We are not portrayed in an array of dimensions-only desperate, sex-starved, money hungry, loud mouths who are never short on attitude that keeps us single. These are the images that our young ladies see. Although many of us work very hard to get and hold on to what we have- our young girls view those who make themselves up and lay on their backs as the idols-that appears to be an easier way to accumulate the must haves in life. Shaunie O'Neal is a very sharp woman whose break out role in the industry was not the best that she could do-she is far more intelligent than Basketball/Football Wives. I've only seen excerpts from the show and thought it to be dull, unentertaining and disappointing.

It's unfortunate that the stage is always set for us according to others, but I agree with you. Also, with the exception of Jennifer those girls all of mixed race or white and spanish etc.
