"This is what happens when you get too emotional," Carlson said. "I'm a dog lover, I love them and...I know a lot about what Michael Vick did...I overspoke. I'm uncomfortable with the death penalty in any circumstance. Of course I don't think he should be executed, but I do think that what he did is truly appalling."
It appears that the heat got too hot for Carlson after the nation expressed outrage at the insensitivity of his comments. But the notion that this conservative attempted to argue that Vick should have been killed for his crime speaks to the perceptions that many conservatives have of both black men and black male athletes. Our prison system is full of African American men who've been either wrongly accused of charges that they could not afford to fight, or excessively sentenced by a prison system that is out of control (for example, the black power advocate in Texas who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for passing a joint to an undercover officer) . The recent release of Cornelius Dupree, a man who spent 30 years in prison on a wrongful conviction, speaks to the seriousness and danger of men like Tucker Carlson. Carlson's comments reflect the very same mindset that leads to judges giving black men longer sentences when they commit the same crimes as whites. The bottom line is that we are executed more readily than others because our lives are deemed to be less valuable.
Rather than writing off Carlson's comments as a simple slip of the tongue, deeper reflection must be done to understand the nature of his racially-charged Freudian slip. The truth is that Carlson's words reflected the sentiment of millions of Americans, and his words are not disconnected from the abuses that occur in our criminal justice system at large. If we don't dig to the root of the issue and allow it to be dismissed with a simple pseudo-apology, we miss the chance to truly understand our problem.

Reflect millions of "white" Americans is what you meant. I'm glad that you have put this issue out there because it's plain as day. Carlson just thought it was cool to belittle a black man and nothing was gonna be said!

Just because one white man made this statement does not mean you should generalize a race to believe the same as him. Being from the same city as Vick, I can tell you that all of us, white or black or hispanic or asain, stand behing his honesty and integrity shown over the course of the past few years.

He is intitled to his opinion. Alot of people black included love dogs and probably would like him killed the same way he killed the dogs, so what? why do you care? its none of your business! Unlike Boyce most of the "nation" could care less about michael vick. I could not care less if he lives or dies. As long ias he doesn't kill my dog. Vick is a big boy he can take care of him self. I am sure he doesn't need you busy bodys protecting him from everybody that wishes him ill. don't you people have anything better to do than worry about a convict millionaire football player? Get a life!!

Bob why don't you get a life , don't you have anything better to do than run behind Dr. Boyce all day?? let me answer that... nope!. Why are wasting time comenting on a Michael Vick story? bottomline is Vick should never have done those things, but he went to jail for it and did his time. Who are we to sit in judgment of him? Tucker Carleson is an idiot that's why he's backing down from his statement.

If 'busybodies' are not out there protecting people from over the top public comments, who is there to protest when someone takes those comments as facts? Tucker had a public forum and should show responsiblilty in how he uses it.

The article seems to claim that every single black man in prison is a victim. Either innocent or excessively sentenced. That cannot be true. Somewhere at least one black man must have been correctly convicted and sentenced. I think that Boyce also over reached, as Tucker did. Granted Tucker's over reach was inexcuseable, while Boyce's was only irritating.
