Given that college athletes are serving as the foundation for massive wealth being generated by schools like the University of Texas, it is time that we consider allowing these athletes to have the same labor rights as other workers who generate wealth around the nation. The United Steel Workers Union has actually spoken out on behalf of NCAA athletes, stating that they should have the right to unionize to ensure that their families can benefit from the wealth being created in these massive financial deals.
African Americans should be concerned about deals like this one for the following reasons: 1) many of the top NCAA athletes in America are black, 2) many of the families of these athletes are in poverty and 3) many athletes are not being educated when they attend football factories like The University of Texas, making them unable to return to their communities as productive husbands and fathers. Systems such as this one serve to undermine the stability of the black family in America and have deep roots in American systemic inequality.
Texas is not only a state that generates hundreds of millions of dollars off of African American athletes. It also happens to have one of the most well-developed prison industrial complexes in the nation. Both of these realities are correlated with the collective effort to exploit the African American male, consistently supporting legislative principles that serve to deny him access to the very same freedoms enjoyed by other Americans (notice that there isn't much interest in supporting the labor rights of prison inmates either) . If black people do not stand together to confront these very serious problems, then they will never go away. At some point, the families of these athletes should be allowed to benefit from the billions that their children are generating on the field, and I recommend a work stoppage to get the point across.

Another way to fight back if you will, is to not accept the "THE FREE EDUCATION". Sort of like boycotting the industry that is exploiting us. Hit-em in the pocketbook. That will put a real dent in the system, or we could just do the work and graduate, like other student athletes.
By the way doesn't the HBCUs or the SWAC do the same thing. Obviously not as much money, but pimp their athletes just the same. With a horrible athletic graduation rate.
Regarding prison, Ive found that not committing crime is how i hurt the "prison industrial complex". I rob them of my labor, by being a good citizen. Granted it doesn't work for all, but for the majority of us, following the law usually keeps us out of prison.
But ur way may be better, we should give a damn, but those who have robbed, raped, molested, murdered, vandalized "US".

I think you are so way off-base with this! Athletics in NCAA is a way for under-performing black students to get the opportunity to go to what is in many cases a top notch university and earn a degree tuition free in exchange for their athletic ability. It is not slavery--that student has the option to say NO and go about his merry way. Dr. Boyce, please stop trying to enslave the minds of the already ignorant with this assessment of NCAA athletics. As an educated black woman who is about to send her honor student son to a D1 school of his choice where he'll compete in a non-revenue sport for the school and is NOT getting a full or even half scholarship to do so, I strongly oppose your suggestion that these athletes are being used when they have an opportunity to get an education that costs $40000 per year that they are on the team. Now, what that athlete does have is a choice to make once he's there at the university is will he take advantage of the massive Athletic Resource Support Centers that most of these D1 schools have or is he going to party hard and fail!! There are many athletes that choose to take advantage of the resources and they succeed in college. Stop turning every situation that involves us black folks into "victimization". As a man with a PhD, you should know that it's not a very healthy attitude to have.

go right ahead have all black college athletes boycott the games. They will just fill the spots with white players with no criminal backgrounds. this way there will be no more problems about money. This way boyce will find out that football and basketball are team sports. People support the team not the individual players.

Dr. Boyce I have been praying for someone to take on the fight for our young African American males. I want them to look at Lebron and understand what he did and why he rec' the reaction he did and how that reaction was generated. Hate a black man who takes control of his money and his life.
If there is a way to unite the top African American college athletes for one weekend. If they were to sit out the first 5 mins of every game played on that weekend I think a clear message would be rec'. I also pray that somehow we can get our top athletes into our Black Colleges so those colleges and universities can get some of the millions of dollars that are being generated.

Not paying collegiate football players is tantamount to SLAVERY!
College athletes are ADULTS. They are dedicated workers. They generate income for their employers. The majority project positive images of their sport throughout the country. They are touted as heroes to young and old alike.
PAY THEM NOW!
