Blue Raider Tina Stewart Fatally Stabbed By Roomate Shanterrica Madden

Today Shanterrica Madden (pictured left) is scheduled to appear in court for her connection to the death of her roommate, the Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) basketball player Clantina "Tina" Marie Lapae Stewart (pictured).

At 6:48 p.m. on Wednesday, Murfreesboro Police Department received a 9-1-1 call about a disturbance at the women's apartment, the school newspaper reports. The cause of the altercation hasn't been confirmed but one can only wonder what would have drove Madden to murder. The officers arrived to find Stewart stabbed and she was sent to the Middle Tennessee Medical Center after the stabbing but died because of the severity of her injuries.

Authorities reported that 18-year-old Madden was charged with first-degree murder of 21-year-old Stewart and has been transferred to the Rutherford County Jail.

Born October 17, 1989, the victim was a Memphis native, junior at MTSU and a guard on women's basketball team the Blue Raiders. The team is the the No. 1 Seed team in the East and Stewart averaged 5.5 points, 2.5 rebounds in 28 games and started in 13 games this season.

The players are scheduled to play in the Sun Belt Conference tournament Friday but the "biggest concern is with Tina and her family. The team is devastated, but we'll work through this together ... one step at a time," said Chris Massaro, MTSU's athletic director.

Her aunt Diane Williams told AOL News that Stewart's parents, Ida and Adrian Jackson, are at the university and that the family is going through a "very hard time" but is "doing OK."

It's unfortunate that two college student's futures were damaged because of an argument but Madden deserves punishment if she is indeed guilty of the murder. If charged, she at least has a chance to attempt to turn her life around after serving her sentence. Stewart, on the other hand, was cheated out of an opportunity to further her dreams.

An impromtu candle-light vigil was held Wednesday night and The Daily News Journal reports that students and faculty planned another vigil Thursday night, with campus counselors available to those grieving her loss. Friends, teammates and mourners can also leave a note on Stewart's memorial page. She leaves her parents and three syblings.
