From The Washington Post:
Charles Barkley is sick and tired of hearing how the sanctuary of the locker room is not ready for a male athlete in a major team sport to come out to his teammates, how awkward everyone would feel after they heard a teammates say, "I'm gay." After all, Barkley has no doubt he played with several gay teammates.
"I didn't think it . . . they were gay," he said when asked Monday about Phoenix Suns President Rick Welts coming out in a 'New York Times' story over the weekend.
The Hall-of-Fame player and TNT analyst added he was certain he had gay teammates "on two of three teams I played on."
Big deal, Barkley basically said, in a wide-ranging interview we taped Monday for my radio show on 106.7 FM: Those two teams with gay players? They still won and flourished. They had camaraderie and chemistry. And no, neither he nor his straight teammates were ever hit on or flirted with to his recollection.
Fears of feeling uncomfortable in the shower or the dressing areas, Barkley said, are unfounded in his experience.
"A guy is never going to put himself in that situation in a professional locker room," Barkley said. "It never crossed my mind, and I never felt any different about the guy."

Quote from extended article: "Barkley added that he wished Welts, whom he knows well because he lives in Phoenix, the best in the fallout from his public revelation. He also explained his stance and feelings about the issue".
Charles Barkley, I'm not buying it.
Of course he's going to say now that he had no problems with any NBA players being gay during his playing days simply because he knows now in this caustic environment that if he told how he really feels then his family and current livelihood living in Phoenix, Arizona and his relationship(s) with the Phoenix Suns organization (who he used to play for and knows President Rick Welts) would cause major problems for him, his family, his profession as an NBA analysts, his reputation and his brand.
He is simply being politically correct and covering his ass so he doesn't inflame the gay community because he understands the repercussions of his truth and another reason why I think that Charles Barkley probably felt the same as many pro athletes who shunned gays playing pro ball is that the then NBA player Charles Barkley, off the basketball court, was a trouble maker and one of the most ignorant and stupid sounding people with a public platform to talk and make comments.
He made plenty of dumbass statements and comments regarding a wide range of subjects while thinking that since he was always being sught out for comments, he thought that people actually throught of him as sensible and smart but they were waiting fr him to say something stupid and they were laughing at him (and continue to do so) and many viewed him as some sort of court jester fool.....But to his credit, he could have cared less and it seems to work for him.
He is just staying out of trouble and not upsetting the Phoeniz Suns.

I think you may be first person in history to accuse Charles Barkley of being politically correct, LOL!

@OOOZZZZZ,
I don't know that it matters "WHY" Charles says he had no problem with gays in the locker room. I remember businesses, other entities and individuals, at least then anyway, stopped saying how they felt "really felt" about black people or women in the workplace too. Their fear would be pretty much the same one you cited for Charles's "political correctness". Unless, a person is committing a crime, there comes a time when those who don't want them around will just have to get over it! Even if it's the fear of being ostracized, prosecuted, fined, stigmatized or whatever. Sometimes, that's what it takes. We really don't know what Charles "really thinks". Do we? All we have is his word. A lot of hardcore institutional racist from back in the day, have since changed their rhetoric too. It's doubtful they changed from a sudden sense of right and wrong.

It sounds as if Charles Barkely is smarter than you. First off, he's multimillionaire and a sought out personality spokesperson. You are homophobe wasting your time making long-winded comments on the internet.

while i'd like to think that the goal of ultimately winning a championship would trump my feeling towards someone's sexual orientation (shit! if it was up to me there'd be no handshaking before a game! why the fuck am i wishing you well when i'm being payed to beat you and win that ring !)
i agree with OOOZZZZZ.barkley's full of shit ! given his track record of comments on any and everything large and small this comment sounds pat and rehersed.
as moronic as i always thought the man could be.one thing i could say about himis that he always kept it real !

looking through some of the comments and i would like to make a remark about Mr. Barkley holding back on his comments, that is something Charles has never done, in my recollection, Mr. Barkley has always been the type to say what is on his mind and i don't see how this time it would be any different. If he said he does not have a problem with some one being gay than he does not have a problem with someone being gay!!!
As far as my personal opinion goes, i could care less about who likes to get hit in the ass or eat carpet; everyone is guilty of a something whether it is homosexuality, whoremonging, violating the temple of the body, putting false prophets before God,and etc..with that being said; we should focus on maintaining our own yards instead of pointing fingers at the neighbors stating what they need to do. If people want to talk about issues let it be about how socially responsible are you and not who is piping who or who is eating who's carpet.
This thing about someone else's sexuality have gone to far. You only need to worry about the next person's sexuality if you are sleeping with them!!

This is the second story on gay black males in just a few days. This demonstrates two things: 1) black males have a high percentage of gays and 2) BV and it's black readers enjoy perverted stories like this.

My best friend is a man who I have know for 40 yrs. When you meet him, you would not know he is gay. A person's Sexuality does not have anything to do with who the person is. I am an avid NBA fan and would say that my "gay antenna" could name four to five NBA players right off the top of my head. We are not hear to judge anyone - just admire their abilty and accept them for who they are. Male or Female
