Chris Cook Arrested

You would think that after watching football player Plaxico Burress wreck his career by carrying his gun in to a New York night club, athletes would have learned the lesson to leave their pistols at home. Minnesota Vikings corner back Chris Cook (pictured) apparently didn't get that memo.

Cook was arrested over the weekend in Virginia for allegedly brandishing a gun during a fight.

Cook, 24, says he got in an argument with his neighbor around 5:30 p.m. Saturday and that the neighbor lied to police about the weapon.

Wes Leonard

Wes Leonard (pictured) of Fennville High School in western Michigan had just lived every boy's dream: sinking the winning shot to win a basketball game and cap a perfect season for his team.

But the dream died literally moments later, when Wes Leonard, 16, collapsed on the court and died in front of a gymnasium of shocked and heartsick fans.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Leonard had scored the game-winning layup to bring his team a 57–55 win over Bridgman High School in an overtime thriller.

Serena Williams Says Getting Healthy is Priority

Tennis star Serena Williams (pictured) thanks her fans for their prayers in light of her emergency hospitalization this week for a blood clot in her lung and a hematoma (pooling of blood under the skin) and said her return to the tennis court will take a back seat to getting healthy:

"While I can't make any promises now on my return [to tennis], I hope to be back by early summer," Williams said in a statement. "That said, my main goal is to make sure I get there safely."

The sports world was stunned with the news early Wednesday that Williams left the red carpet at a celebrity gala Sunday for the Oscars and checked in to a Los Angeles hospital for emergency treatment.

Williams was treated first for the blood clot and later needed emergency medical attention for the hematoma.

Negro League's Little Giant Cecil Kaiser Dead

Cecil Kaiser was known as a little giant of Negro League baseball.

At 5 foot-6 inches and just 165 pounds, many teammates enjoyed a size advantage over the New York native. But when it came to playing baseball, few could stand up to his pitching prowess.

Kaiser died this week at age 94 after a fall at his Michigan home.

Dwaine Caraway, Michael Vick

He might have won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year, led his Philadelphia Eagles to the playoffs, avoided scandal off the field and became the national poster boy for public character rehabilitation.

But to some, Michael Vick will always be a dog-killing criminal unfit for any honors, awards or plaudits, and it seems Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert is on that list.

Last Saturday, Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway gave Vick the key to the city before Sunday's Super Bowl.

Exactly why Vick got the key is a little cloudy to me. He had a nice season, but so did a lot of NFL players (not wearing Dallas Cowboy uniforms).

Top Recruit C.J. Johnson Blames Facebook For Recruiting

These should be happy times for top football recruit C.J. Johnson of Philadelphia, Mississippi.

His biggest problem these days should be getting ready for life at college and preparing his body to play big-time college football on a national stage.

Instead, Johnson has become the poster boy for what can go wrong when privacy is invaded, college loyalties run amok and people use social media sites like Facebook to make people look bad.

Johnson says he was the target of such a campaign that was triggered by a recruiting war between bitter college rivals --the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University -- for the services of Johnson, an all-state linebacker.

Johnson had decided to attend Mississippi State but changed his mind when defensive coach Manny Diaz left the school. Johnson then decided to attend Mississippi.

Arrest Warrant Issued for Troubled Floyd Mayweather

Boxing fans eager to see the only professional championship fight that really matters, Floyd "Money" Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, may have to give of the dream of seeing the world's two finest fighters square off.

Although Pacquiao seems to get better with each performance in the ring, Mayweather's best boxing achievements are fading into distant memories because his legal problems have sent him into a spiral.

Mayweather's latest woe came last night when the boxer was arrested on the Las Vegas strip for an outstanding warrant after a November clash with a security guard who Mayweather allegedly poked in the eye.

Mayweather was released from the Clark County Detention Center Friday afternoon on $33,000 bail, according to ESPN reports.

Give Cam the Heisman Trophy - For Now

The best thing about most sports is that the result is settled on a scoreboard.

Yes, there are a few exceptions like figure skating (and we all know that's not really a sport, right?), where the subjective and sometimes biased opinions of a judge can make the difference between winning and losing.

But generally, all one has to do is look at the scoreboard to tell who wins and who loses.

That same logic should be applied in the controversy over Auburn University quarterback Cam Newton and his controversial Heisman Trophy campaign.

On-the-field performance is usually the sole measuring stick for who wins the Heisman, which is given to the best college football player in the land.

But this year, with allegations swirling around Newton that he tried to get Mississippi State University to pay him a six-figure fee to attend that school in violation of NCAA rules, some folks are saying Newton should be disqualified from Heisman consideration.
