The Laureus World Sports Awards recognizes athletes and sports-affiliated personalities for their endeavors in their respective sports and communities. This year's awards were held in Abu Dhabi, where Serena Williams was awarded Sportswoman of the year for getting her No. 1 ranking in 2009 and winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles and Usain Bolt won Sportsman of the Year for winning three gold medals at the World Championships. More Black American athletes are choosing to play other sports, such as basketball and football, but there are plenty of Black Latino (or Afro-Latino) players. According to L.A. Despite PETA and other animal rights organizations protesting outside of the 32nd Annual Ed Block Courage Awards banquet, Michael Vick accepted his Ed Block award proudly. According to the Associated Press, protesters were outside of a Baltimore banquet hall holding signs that said, "No Award for Dog Killers," while Vick was inside giving his acceptance speech. Dikembe Mutombo is no longer playing NBA basketball, but that's not stopping him from trying to make a difference. The 7-footer partnered with the U.S. Census to encourage both African-Americans and Africans living in the United States to take part in the national count. Mutombo will also somehow "utilize the Census information for outreach projects to improve the quality of life for the people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo," according to a press release.
